Interview With Jim Shit from The Jachammers

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass Jim. For anyone new to The Jackhammers can you give us a little history on how the band got started?

Jim Shit: We started a few years back. I love punk rock but was sick of the half-arsed bands and dead-end sub genres that pass as punk these days - so decided to take the matter in hand. Initially our guitarist was Albert Scunge; then we added Horace; then Albert joined the breeding program and had to bail, leaving us with just Horace on guitar. Me and Andy have been in it from the start.

CM: The bands latest album "Give 'Em Enough Dope" is just amazing! I had the chance to review the album for CM and I fell in love with the bands style of playing and songwriting. Is this the bands first album or is there more material out there?

JS: "Give 'Em Enough Dope" is our debut LP which we've released on CD on our own S'Not Records. We've previously released a couple of demo CDs, but the best versions of the best songs off them are all on the LP.

CM: Who are some of the bands musical influences?

JS: Ramones, Damned, the Kids, Wipers, Slaughter & the Dogs, Devo, Black Flag, Consumers, Poison Idea, Didjits, Livefastdie, CPC Gangbangs, and the Spits. But to be honest we are more inspired by the banality of life and the ridiculous things people do to combat it.

CM: I know "Give 'Em Enough Dope" just recently came out, but can we expect any new releases in 2012 whether it be another full length, an EP or a singe?

JS: Well, we've just recorded a buncha new songs - some of which we're planning to release on split 45s w/ cool bands later this year ....watch this space!

CM: Has the band ever gone out on tour? And have you been approached by any bands to go out on tour as an opener?

JS: We've done a coupla "long weekend" mini-tours down to England, and we plan to do plenty more of those. No-one's asked us to support them on tour - I guess because no-one wants the humiliation of being blown off the stage nightly!

CM: Who are some of your favorite bands to play live with?

JS: The Maximum Zeros (punk rock'n'roll from Newcastle, England) are always fun.

CM: Any chances of the band coming over to the U.S. for a tour at some point?

JS: We'd love to tour the States and sample all your vices, but we'd need a US label to release our stuff first there - so there'd be a chance of people showing up and us covering our costs.

CM: Is there a website you guys wanna plug where fans can get in touch with the band, get up to date news on tour dates and get merch?

Music Reviews: Dan Vapid & The Cheats - "Dan Vapid & The Cheats"

Dan Vapid has been a big part of the Chicago punk scene for over 20 years. He's been an integral part of the classic Screeching Weasel line-up as well as the frontman for such seminal bands like Sludgeworth, The Riverdales, The Mopes, The Methadones and more recently Noise By Numbers. Now he's back with a new band, Dan Vapid & The Cheats, a new album and a new attitude!

Dan Vapid & The Cheatsnew self titled album, CD set to hit the streets on May 1, is jam packed with some of the best material Mr. Vapid has ever recorded. And with his track list of legendary material, that's saying something. The album features 15 tracks that range in style from Ramones style pop punk ("What Do You Wanna Do Tonight") to doo wop ("Girl Group") and even some new wave ("Devo On Speed"). This records is an all around party! Vapid has a band that brings out not only the best in his playing, but also his songwriting as well. The group consists of players who have played along side Dan in the past. Mike Byrne (guitar) and Mike Soucy (drums) played with Dan in The Methadones and Simon Lamb (bass) played in a later day versions of both Weasel and the Riverdales, so you just know this is gonna be a great band playing some great punk rock!

Dan sounds more comfortable on this record than on anything else he's done up to this point. And by comfortable I mean he's not afraid to mix styles of songwriting and playing. In a recent interview I did with Dan he said in each band he was in he made an effort not to sound like the band before. But now he's okay being who he is and writing what he feels in his heart saying "If it sounds like a Screeching Weasel song, that's fine. If it sounds like a Riverdales song, that's fine. And if it sounds like a Methadones song, that's fine. I'm just gonna roll with it and realize that the goal is to have as much fun as I can making the best music I can." And he's doing just that.

The album is book ended with what very well could be 2 of the best songs Dan has ever written in the forms of "Torture Chamber" and "It Lives By Night". But to be honest, any of the other 13 tracks could be put up with the best of em. This is the feel GREAT record of 2012. Bravo to Mr. Vapid and his band of Cheats on making not only a great album, but a record that will stand the test of time as one of Vapid's greatest musical accomplishments. A man who has given so much of himself over the last 20+ years has found strength and comfort in being himself and doing what HE wants to do and not what is expected of him. Dan, you've earned it my friend. It's been an honor for me to be along for the ride year after year, album after album, show after show. This is a new chapter. And if the stars stay aligned it will be a long and exciting chapter.

Even though the hard copy of the album won't be available until May, you can hear the album in it's entirety and buy the digital download at the bands Bandcamp page. It's well worth the wait, and the money to have something this fun, exciting and just all around amazing coming from one of our own.

Music Review: Tattoo The Devil - "The Descent EP"

The Chicago music scene is so alive with different styles and sounds. You will never grow tired of discovering new bands and new styles in this city. Some bands will blow your mind with creativity and passion, where some will just plain bore you to tears. A new band called Tattoo The Devil has caught my attention in a big way! Being a music lover I'll listen to almost anything if I find it appealing to the ears. And TTD are not only appealing to the ears, but they also excite the senses with their brand of progressive metal.

The bands latest release, the "Decent EP", is a 3 song taste of what to expect from their upcoming full length due later in the year. The music is brilliant and captivating, played with fierce intensity and drive. If you like Euro metal, New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, prog metal or power metal, this band has a little bit of all that rolled into a sound all their own. The opening track "The Decent" is riff heavy and melodic with beautifully layered vocals. It starts out hard then goes into a piano and string based mid section that is both gothic and medieval. But at the same time the song never loses it's heavyness. They put a new spin on an old style of music with powerful playing and lyrics that send the imagination into overdrive.

This talented sextet, Lance Ferrel (vocals), Christopher "Dizzy" Lee (guitar/backing vocals), Dominick Camillo (guitar), Mario Camillo (bass), Chris King (drums) and Zak Auble (keyboards), bring a different flavor to each song. These gentlemen are true musicians in the truest sense of the word. "Diegos Tango" has a hearty back beat, shredding guitar leads and an Italian flamenco feel that just gels so well together, but maintains it's metal credibility. The EP closes with "The Darkest Seed", with it's chugging guitars and melodic falsetto vocals, it;'s a great way to close out a killer EP. But as great as this EP is, it leaves this listener wanting more. Sometimes 3 songs are just not enough. But if the full length is half as good as this EP, I think the wait will be well worth it.

You'll be hard pressed to find another metal band with so much influence and talent wrapped into one tight package. The songs are well written and played and the choruses will have you singing along until your vocal chords hurt. If this band were around back in the mid-late 80's they would have been HUGE! But with the underground metal scene still alive, I see no reason why Tattoo The Devil can't be the next big metal band to come out of the Midwest.

Music News: New Punk Documentary To Premier In Chicago

Punk rock has been a musical force for over 40 years now. Starting with bands like The Stooges and New York Dolls. But it didn't really explode until the mad 70's with bands like the Ramones, Sex Pistols and The Clash. Punk as a genre has been documented on film numerous times over the years mostly focusing on the American scene. Films like The Decline Of Western Civilization, Another State Of Mind and most recently American Hardcore all focused on bands like Black Flag, Social Distortion and Minor Threat. And the English punk bands have been documented in films like The Filth And The Fury and The Clash: Westway To The World. So much has been made of the English and American punk scenes that other countries get lost in mix. But all that's about to change.

My friend Martin Nunez has documented the rise of the punk rock scene is his homeland of Chile in the new film PANK, Orígenes del Punk en Chile. The film will make it's American debut at the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival in April. This is Martin's first film and touches on how punk rock has changed the lives and social conscience of the people of Chile with interviews with bands and fans from all over the country. This is an exciting and well documented film from a talented up and coming film maker.

Music News: Kevin Seconds/Kepi Ghoulie Live

Kevin Seconds has been touring non stop the last few years as a one man show playing his brand of acoustic music that meshes his acoustic singer/songwriter music with his roots in hardcore punk. Fans know Kev as the in your face singer for the legendary Reno, NV band 7 Seconds who have recorded such modern day classics records as The Crew and Walk Together, Rock Together. But Kev has grown as a musician and a songwriter with his acoustic albums and live shows. Don't miss his triumphant return to Chicago.

Kepi Ghoulie is best known as the singer for Groovie Ghoulies According to sources close to the man he's been on tour for like 12 years straight. Come on out and see his new band playing this intimate show featuring an all acoustic set. It's a show not to be missed.

Love And Squalor are a punk band from Chicago who have been making a name for themselves playing multiple shows and bringing their infectious brand pf punk to the masses. The band is currently set to release their new album Among The Ruins, Rejoice later this summer. Check them out playing this rare acoustic set before they plug back in and melt your face off. It's a once in a lifetime set.

Brandon Harrod is the drummer for Chicago's own garage rock super heroes The Larroquettes. But he's also a talented singer/songwriter in his own right who's released 3 solo albums so far. His latest album Wide Open Sun is a favorite here at Critical Mass. Check him out and see why we dig him so much.

Interview with Jared Michael Pihl from Mourning Rain

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass. For those new to Mourning Rain, can you give us a little history on the band and how you got started?

Jared Pihl: No problem at all. Mourning Rain started with myself on guitar/vocals and Natalie (Rose) on the bass around the summer of 2010. We met Devin (Justman), who is a very talented drummer, in November of 2010 and jumped right into a steady routine of rehearsing that hasn't stopped to this day. The three of us have a very similar outlook on music, so we clicked right away. Which is very rare.

CM: I hear so many styles of music in the bands sound, and it's all amazingly great! How would you best describe your sound to people who have not heard you yet?

JP: Thank you. That is probably the single hardest question we are asked and it's also the most common for those who have not heard us yet. The best way to describe us is a hard rock/psychedelic band with some funk/jazz/alternative sprinkled throughout.

CM: Again, there are so many styles going on in your music I have to ask, who are some of the bands musical influences?

JP: We try to keep our music original while staying true to the musical tastes of each member of the band. I have always loved hard rock and blues, all the guitar heroes of the 60's, 70's & 80's. That's where I come from with music, while Natalie is a big fan of the bands like the Deftones & Nirvana. Devin comes from a more classic music background, bringing a more jazzy, funky and progressive feel of bands like Rush, James Brown & Porcupine Tree. But I think we all share a common love for effective rock music with a strong sense of melody.

CM: I have had the chance to hear the 4 songs the band currently has up on Facebook. Are those tracks available for purchase on an EP or demo?

JP: No, those tracks were recorded in a very timely fashion with no money. My brother, who is sort of an amateur recording technician and also a talented bassist in his own band, The Things They Carried, recorded us very quickly with his equipment as a favor. So between the fact that the quality isn't at all on par to what we are aiming for and that we didn't pay to record the songs, we did not feel it necessary to charge our fans money for it. Those tracks are like a sampler for what is to come, we hand those songs out for free to those who come to our shows.

CM: Are there any plans to release an album or EP in the near future?

JP: Yes. We are in the process of choosing a studio to record in our area of Long Island. We will most likely record a 5 or 6 song EP within the next month or two, it seems like the only logical step forward at this point in the band. Things have been moving very fast since the three of us got together and it only seems right to take the band as far as it can go.

CM: Have any labels approached you guys yet as far as releasing your material at a later date?

JP: As far as labels, managers or promoters, we have not ventured into that territory yet. I'm getting the feeling it will happen very soon, probably after we record our EP. We are very concentrated right now on fine tuning our setlist with a lot of live shows and hard work practicing. We have been a band for a little over a year now and are working our way through the trenches of the Long Island/New York rock scene, which as many would tell you is overcrowded with a certain scene right now. We look forward to meeting any label or manager who approaches us but you have to be careful with the business side of things with a band, we're not going to rush into anything without thinking it through first.

CM: I know the band plays out around your hometown. But have you ever played outside of New York? And are there any plans to take the show on the road at some point?

JP: There are always plans to take the band further. Right now we are working nonstop booking shows whenever they come up and making our live show as good as it possibly can be. We haven't played outside of New York yet, but we are sure that is definitely something that will happen very shortly up the road.

CM: Is there a website you wanna plug where fans can get in touch with the band, find out about upcoming gigs, news and new music?

JP: As of right now, we are working on our own website but you can find any info about us on our Facebook page. There you can find our free downloadable songs, upcoming shows and lots of pics and videos.

Music Reviews: Lili Champ - "Vientos"

Music is an international language that can reach far beyond any country or language barrier. If the music is good and you can feel the energy racing in your heart and pumping in your veins it won't matter where it comes from. And if we don't look outside of our own backyard from time to time we may never find the musical beauty that awaits us in other lands far away. Santiago, Chile's own Lili Champ are trying to show that punk rock is also an integral part of that language with their debut album "Vientos".

The 8 songs on "Vientos" are so powerful and melodic that you'll forget that 6 of the 8 tracks are in Spanish. Kicking off with "Entrevientos" the band shows a strong sense of melody and great pop/punk hooks that any fan of bands like NOFX or The Queers would thoroughly enjoy. Complete with a chorus packed with "whoa oh oh's" it's just a great way to kick off the album. "Cheap Bad Coffee" is a fast paced romp with great guitar riffs and a frantic bass and drum beat. This is one of the 2 tracks that is in English. But that shouldn't matter. It's just a GREAT tune!

The band isn't just playing hard charged pop/punk. They also pull out a couple folky jams in the form of "Entrecerros" and "5to. Piso" where they play jangly chords over less aggressive vocals in the style of Against Me! and even Dropkick Murphys (minus the bagpipes). The band, Gaston (bass/vocals), Matias (guitar) and Pato (drums) really play well together on this album showcasing a strong bond that's obvious on tracks like "Westerlies" and "Ciclon". They have gotten the pop/punk style down to a science and they're not afraid to wear their heart on their sleeve with intensity and drive.

Whether the band is singing in Spanish or in English, you'll be singing along in no time. It's just that good and catchy. I could see this band playing on a bill with Millencolin , Teenage Bottlerocket and NOFX and fitting right in. Greatness speaks for itself even if it's in a language you may not be familiar with. But don't take my word for it. Check out Lili Champ on your own and let the music speak for itself. This is by far one of the best albums I've heard this year. Good job gentlemen!

Music Reviews: The Wrong Boyfriends - "Wrong Fucking Century Darling"

Being able to write reviews has given me access to so many bands from all over the world. I'm grateful to get the chance to hear bands I may not have had the chance to hear otherwise. And The Wrong Boyfriends are one of those bands. They are a cool band from Helensburgh, Scotland who play what I would consider 60's inspired punk rock. Others may not be able to categorize the bands sound. But I'll do my best to describe it as such.

The bands newest album "Wrong Fucking Century Darling" is 13 tracks of garage rock, post punk and hardcore music mixed together to make an exciting album. The album kicks off with the instrumental "Le Chroma". It features jangly distorted guitars, an easy mellow back beat and even some mild keyboards just for good measure. If upon hearing this track you think that this is the what the rest of the album will sound like, you're dead wrong. It goes into the next track "Boats" with it's "I Wanna Be Your Dog" sounding guitar attack and Stooges sounding vocal approach that's a complete 180 degree turn from the opener. You can see this band takes it's influences seriously on this album.

"Dreadnought" is by far the heaviest track on the album. Riff heavy and angry, this song is a standout for all you hardcore fans out there who only want in your face and pissed off music. But the band, Sean (vocals/guitar), Peter (bass) and Dom (drums), are not afraid to take on post punk with songs like "These Days", "Scientist" and "Coming Up For Air". There's even the Lou Reed sounding "Taking Turns On Sharon" which is kinda twisted lyrically, but musically brilliant. But even with trying to have a sound all their own, the influence is noticeable on most of these tracks which can be either a blessing or a curse depending on who the listener is. Between the groove heavy riffs, keyboards and just an all around garage style sound, the band definitely has a modern sound with 60's swing, which I think is kinda cool. Garage rock will never go out of style if done right.

I never had a problem with bands using their musical influences as a blueprint for their own originality. As long as it's not an apparent ripoff, it's flattering. But next time around I wanna hear more original and less of what's already available from The Wrong Boyfriends. I can hear the talent they possess. I just hope they can break out and truly make a record that all their own. All in all "Wrong Fucking Century Darling" isn't a bad record. The playing is great and the lyrics are quite good. If handled properly, this band could be really big.

Music Reviews: The Jackhammers - "Give 'Em Enough Dope"

Punk rock has had many different styles over the years. But the best punk rock is when a band simply plugs into an amp, hits the distortion pedal and just goes nuts playing loud and being obnoxious. It's just a basic animalistic instinct with true punk rockers. If people get it, cool. If not, even better! Glasgow's The Jackhammers play old school punk rock. Loud, fast, obnoxious, vulgar. The kinda punk that would make your parents think you've lost your mind. And I like it!

The bands newest album is called "Give 'Em Enough Dope". The title is a knock off of the second album by the Clash. But the sound is more 80's aggro in it's sound and presentation than The Clash were. But at the same time they tip the hat to bands like the Sex Pistols and The Damned on songs like "Punk Rules" and "Tourettes Lautrec". These are classic distortion driven songs that make you clench your fists and scream out loud in excitement. Get ready people, it's about to get rowdy in here!

The band, Jim Shit (vocals/bass), Andy Drankit (drums), Horace Cockpuppet (guitar) and Albert Scunge (guitar) play hard and keep it simple with 3 chord punk anthems like the 70's sounding "Flesh Gridlock" and "Bingo Wings Breakout". But they also have enough aggressive angst to spit out tunes with titles like "Used Rubber" and "The World Is My Toilet". It may be 2012, but these lads are still pissed off, ripped off and screwed by the world around them. And they don't care who knows or what you think about it! That is the sign of classic in your face punk rock. The sound that brought it into the world in the first place.

They wanna get the pit started with "Retard Masterplan" and it's none stop elbows and knuckles the rest of the way. The album is definitely made to slam to. It makes you feel the anger and frustration that they feel on tracks like "Bags Of Dogshit" and "You're All Dead". If you can't take it raw and in your face, I would suggest staying away from this album. If you can still get down and dirty slamming in the pit and raising your fist in unison, this album is for you.

Lets face it, punk rock was never meant to be homogenized and kid friendly (take that Billie Joe Armstrong). It was meant to let society know that we're individuals who have a right to say, think and feel what we want. And let it be known that we WON'T conform to things we don't feel comfortable with. We have a voice and we're gonna use it to let you know what we think is wrong with the world. That way of thinking and punk rock in general may have gone to the dogs in recent years, but it's refreshing to see bands like The Jackhammers are around reminding us that this style and attitude is still alive and kicking.

Music Reviews: Mourning Rain - "Demo"

In this day and age of music you need to be either radio friendly and trendy or you'll forever be a struggling musician without a snowballs chance in hell of making it on the radio. I've never had much respect for bands or artists who have had a career handed to them (i.e. American Idol) or sell a million albums by dropping the "f bomb", wearing pants around their ankles, rapping about smoking weed, packing heat, killing cops, banging and slapping woman around. There's just no room in my life for that garbage. That's why I always look out for new bands who may not fit the criteria of "Top 40" mainstream, but have true talent none the less. Bands who write their own songs, play an actual instrument and gig around in a van with a passion for their craft. I've found a new band who's happy doing what they love without conforming to what the music industry wants them to be. They are a talented band from Long Island called Mourning Rain.

Mourning Rainare currently working on their debut album, but in the meantime I was able to get a copy of the bands 4 song demo. And to say I was blown away by their style and talent is being modest. The 4 songs are so well crafted and touch upon so many different styles of music that it's hard to peg them as being one genre or another. "Last Clear Memory" has a classic rock feel to it with great guitar noodling from singer/guitarist Jared Michael Pihl. But it's also very modern sounding with the great rhythm section of bassist Natalie Rose and drummer Devin Justman who fit well with Pihl's style of playing. This track goes from moody and mellow with somber lyrics and melodies into a scorching heavy metal friendly guitar solo without taking away the beauty of the song. It's an odd combination that just goes so well together.

"Lost Connection" has a smooth R&B opening riff that goes into an almost 90's alternative feel, and back again. Once again combining different styles without turning into mush or taking away from the beauty of the song. I can't help but think this band grew up on a healthy diet of Oasis, Black Sabbath and smooth jazz, opening their minds to the possibility of making great songs on their own terms without being cornered by one sound or style. The music is layered wonderfully and played with honest feel and passion throughout. "Nameless" being a standout track that really shows the intensity in the bands playing and songwriting. It's catchy, hook driven with great, tight playing by all involved. This track screams hit. Such a beautiful song.

"Swept Ashore" closes out this demo. It's a cool song, but it kinda gets lost in the muddy production. I think that with some knob twisting it can really bring this track to life. It's a great song, it just needs a little work. If the band re-cut these tracks for their debut, I think they will have a monster hit on their hands. I have heard a lot of demos from up and coming bands trying to find a sound all their own. But this is a really stellar effort form an exciting new band. I can't begin to tell you how refreshing it is to see young musicians taking a giant leap forward with their creativity. Mourning Rain, I salute you! I can't wait to see what this band comes up with next.

Music Review: The Bucky Rage - "Mini Album"

I've always been a fan of garage rock. For me, music ignites the fire in the soul and gets the blood and juices flowing. And there is nothing like the crunch, power, passion, intensity and drive of good old rock n roll. The Bucky Rage, from Glasgow Scotland, take that intensity and passion and bring it to the next level on their new 7 song "mini" album, which is just a taste of what we can expect from the bands up coming full length.

The album opens with "Cut Em Down" which is very reminiscent of The Stooges classic "1969". It's heavy and in your face with just enough umph to make you shake your tail feather without being too heavy. It's a great opening track. "Pow Wow" takes a light turn with super cool 3 part harmonies and a great organ that just adds to the power of the songs, just like back in the 60's. Sure, I'm a sucker for organs in rock n roll. But these guys truly bring it back old school style without being ridiculously retro that you'll be turned off. It's just good old fashioned fun music played by really competent musicians, so don't let the Mexican wrestling masks fool you into thinking otherwise.

The band, Philthy Collins (drums/vocals), Handsome Al (guitar/backup vocals), Pete Khaos (organ) and Panther Adams (bass) really take the influential sound of bands like The Stooges, Question Mark And The Mysterians and sprinkle it with Ronettes style harmonies. It's a perfect mixture too. The band is tight and spontaneous bringing out the best in each player. These guys really have perfected their craft on these tracks.

"Bubblegum Crisis" is another great tune. A true ode to all things 60's from the organ sound and catchy guitar riffs right down to the "whoa oh oh oh" sing along at the end. So sugary sweet you'll wanna break out the old Hullabaloo DVD collection your mom and dad have.

The Bucky Rage really are a fun and exciting band so full of spastic energy and excitement. Throw in a kooky cool image and it's truly a win win for all parties involved. I hope these Libre rock n rollers cross the pond and come to America for some shows soon. They'll fit right in! The Bucky Rage, a great band worth checking out.

Music Reviews: Nick Minnow - "Nick Minnow Presents: Plant Music (an untested hypothesis)"

The joy of music is that there is so many different styles to choose from. You have your traditional styles like jazz, country, rock and R&B. Then you can mix and mesh styles to create a different style but still stay true to what you believe in. Jazz fusion, southern rock, alternative country and trip hop...just to name a few. So when an artists comes along that's so diverse and original, it's not only a pleasure to the ears, but to the senses as well.

Nick Minnow is one of those artists that take so many styles and turn it into something original and exciting all at once. It may catch you off guard, but, if you're like me, you'll soon fall so into it you'll enjoy it greatly. Minnow's new album "Nick Minnow Presents: Plant Music (an untested hypothesis)", out now on Mooster Records, is so out there, so off the map that it's kinda cool and invigorating to hear. It's a mixture of jazz, industrial and experimental rock all rolled into one big ball of sound!

The album, which, by the way is a conceptual piece, features some freak out tunes like "Plantae Imploration" "Tenric Excalibur" and "Closer To Photosynthesis". The songs are well crafted and have that acid jazz sonic structure to them but at the same time have almost a danceable feel as well. It's definitely an album to get baked to!

Although it's not normally my style of music, I can appreciate what Minnow's bringing to the table here. This is obviously a man of ideas and imagination. And he's not afraid to take those ideas and put them to music. He's making music that he feels in his soul, and it truly comes out in the songs. Now, if only there were more artists that played what they feel in their gut and not what they think will make them stars, the music world would be a much brighter and diverse place.

Interview with Lew Palgrave aka The Rag N Bone Man

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass, Lew. For those new to The Rag N Bone Man, can you give us a little history on how you got started?

Lew Palgrave: Born outta frustration of life in bands in general. Punk ethos and the D.I.Y route. Being a one man band is the ultimate D.I.Y approach. Be the drummer be the guitarist be the vocalist the song writer, the harmonica player no rules and no sets or song structure to stick too. Nowadays being a musician means you have too compose, write, book, promote, record, mix, master, design etc etc, the one man band approach is taking that one step further.

CM: I really like your dirty blues style along with the distortion vocals. Do you find you're more rooted in Chicago blues, Delta, the English blues explosion of the 1960's or a mixture of all of them?

LP: I'm a great fan of Chicago and delta blues and blues in general, though I'm not a fan of eye's closed head back guitar solo kinda blues I find that stuff shit and insulting to be honest.

CM: Who are some of your musical influences and how do they play into what you do as an artist?

LP: Everything from Little Walter to Minor threat, but my main influences are the people and the bands i share the stage with regularly. There are some cracking bands in the underground scene in Scotland The Bucky Rage, Acid Fascists, Filthy Little Secret, iwantout, Homesick Aldo, Sleepy Eyes Nelson, Shoogar to name just a few. Playing with bands you dig is the best influence you could possibly ask for.

CM: Have you ever considered adding more musicians and forming a full on blues band?

LP: Not a fuckin chance. I play with a 2 piece band called Ghosts Of Progress which consists of me doing my one man band set up with ONE other guitarist, that's as close as I'll ever get to being in a band again. I don't want the hassle of dealing with egos, opinions, shit time keeping, annoying girl friends and being let down, I have no need to go down that road. thankfully.

CM: I've had the chance to hear and review your 4 song demo, and think it's amazing! Will we be seeing any new material this year?

LP: Definitely, I plan to record music every few months, it's something I've avoided too often due to gigging constantly, I enjoy it a bit more nowadays still enjoy gigging far more.

CM: Have you been approached by any labels as far as releasing your material to a wider audience?

LP: I've a couple of labels interested putting out some Rag N Bone Man vinyl which should be out this year, and one of my tunes will be released by Dead By Mono records as part of a really cool compilation record which is out end of march. I'm in the process of starting up my own D.I.Y Label to release some of my music through that.

CM: Do you play a lot of shows in your area and are there any plans on touring in the near future?

LP: I play live all the time. pubs, clubs, venues, records shops, book shops, sheds anywhere I can. I plan to get myself to Ireland and Europe on tour very soon too.

Interview with Goin' Places

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass. For those new to Goin' Places, can you give us some history on how the band got started?

Victor: "We were hanging out in my basement and started writing songs"

Richie: "We started to jam in our downtime and write songs that we're intended to be jokes - we decided to demo these songs and people took interest in them. The rest is history."

CM: Your newest release, "Relationship Sneakers", just came out and it's amazing and I know it's been a while since you guys released an album. Was it easy to come up with the songs for this album after being away for so long?

Richie: "It was very easy because most of the songs on 'Relationship Sneakers' were written around the time we made our first album. Only two songs were written recently - Be With Me (2007/2008) and Bedroom Window (2008)."

Frank: "A few of the songs on the new album were originally written and demoed back in October of 2000. Other then the two songs Richie mentioned all the songs on the album have been around since at least 2003, if not earlier. We've been wanting to record the album for years, but it kept getting delayed for one reason or another. It's nice to finally get it done."

CM: Speaking of being away, you guys last released an album back in the early 2000's before taking some time off. What were you guys up to between the last album and "Relationship Sneakers"? Was there any bands that were spawned from Goin' Places that released any material?

Richie: "We were all working full-time jobs. Two of us got married. One of us had children. There weren't any bands that spawned from Goin' Places but I recorded an album with my first band, Yellow Teeth. Its called "Polyrockisim" - 16 pop punk songs."

Victor: "No bands but 3 movies."

Frank: "We made a short film in 2002 called 'A Goin' Places Tale'. After spending most of 2008 filming two more short films we decided it was finally time to record the follow up album we'd been planning for years."

CM: With your last album you had Mass Giorgini helping out and Joe Queer playing on it as well. Has Joe or Mass reached out to you guys since getting back together?

Richie: "We saw Joe recently at a Queers show. We haven't seen Mass in a while - we need to catch up sometime."

Frank: "Last I heard Mass was still recording at the studio, but he had also gotten a job as a college professor. Also, even though it seems like we are getting back together for this new album we never actually broke up. Over the years since our first album we've been playing shows every once in a while and even recorded an album of Beatles covers."

CM: I know this is a silly question, but who are some of the bands musical influences?

Richie: "Green Day, The Beatles, The Queers, Screeching Weasel, NOFX, Bad Religion, MTX, The Ataris, Less Than Jake, The Ramones, The Huntingtons, Mxpx, Rancid"

Frank: "Individually we each listen to all kinds of stuff...but as far as influences that end up in our songwriting, anything that is simple and melodic is usually the stuff we all agree on."

CM: When it comes to the whole songwriting process is it a group effort or is there a primary songwriter?

Richie: "It depends on the song - we don't have set rules for this."

Victor: "We have used both methods. There have been times when we all sit together and write something and there are other times when each of us have brought in a song that we wrote and tried it as a band to see if we like it."

Frank: "The first album was mostly made up of songs that were written as a group. This new one has more songs that were written individually. Richie and Victor do most of the songwriting, but they usually don't work on songs together until it comes time for the arrangement and harmonies."

CM: Do you guys play out a lot in your area?

Richie: "No. Nobody gives a shit about us."

Victor: "No longer. There was a time when we played every week, now we are lucky if we play once a year."

CM: I honestly feel that this new album is a REALLY strong effort. Are there any plans on taking the show on the road for some shows? Maybe get out to Chicago at some point?

Richie: "Thank you. If we can get on some good shows - maybe. It depends on a lot of things."

Frank: "I don't think we're going to be jumping in a van and driving around the country playing shows anytime soon. But we will happily make our way out to Chicago if we can get on a show as an opener for Screeching Weasel next time they play Reggies or something like that."

Victor: "If there was a demand we are open to playing a few shows."

Interview with Jeff Hancock from Hopewrecker

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk withCritical Mass, Jeff. For those new to Hopewrecker, can you give us some historyon the band and how you got started?

Jeff Hancock: Thanks for having me! We started aroundFall 2011. We all come from other bands and had played together before but Ipersonally hadn’t been in a band for a long time. I’ve really never stoppedwriting songs though and all of sudden I was coming up with a bunch of greatsongs and that inspired me to get everyone together and bash them out. Thingsstarted moving pretty quick and response has been really good so far.

CM: I know the band’s in the process of finding a label to release your debut7". How that hunt going?

JH: Well, we’re still looking as of rightnow. We’re asking around and reaching out to labels from all over the world.It’s tough you know? It’s a lot to ask of someone to drop a chunk of money onmaking a record for you. We are actually working on a couple split singlesthough. One is with The Jetty Boys from Wisconsin and another with Brick Mowerfrom New Jersey. These are going to be split label releases and we’re stilltrying to get a second label to go in on each one. Once the labels areconfirmed then things will really be rolling. Both of those bands made some of my favoritereleases from the past couple of years so I’m really crossing my fingers thatthey happen. My dream is to build up a huge discography for Hopewrecker. Ireally think we’ll be lucky enough to release a few 7”s this year, between ourown EPs and splits.

CM: I had the chance to review your demo for Critical Mass and was greatlysurprised at how well it sounded for a demo. Did you guys record the demo onyour own?

JH: Dude, thank you for the compliment! Your review was so fucking positiveit really floored us. It reads like we paid you huge amounts of money…which Iswear we didn’t. Yeah we did everything ourselves at home. I’m lucky thatbetween Jon and Wal there’s all the equipment and know how to make some greatsounding recordings. It’s really a luxury. We are able to record songs forprojects as needed.

CM: I hear a lot of pop punk influences in your sound. Who are some of thebands musical influences?

JH: I love pop punk and definitely knew Iwas going for some specific sound. When I say pop punk I mean primitive beats,catchy riffs, fun lyrics and major hooks…old Lookout stuff. For this band I’musually thinking about a band like The Riverdales or The Descendents but alsojust classic melodies and inspiration from old girl groups and forgottenrecords from the ‘50s and ‘60s. People hear all sorts of influences in oursongs, some of which I never noticed…Turbonegro, Swingin’ Utters, Fifteen,Naked Raygun…I’ll take all of those as a big compliment.

CM: When it comes to the whole songwriting process is it a group effort or isthere a primary songwriter in the group?

JH: Well so far it’s been just me bringingcompleted songs to the rest of the band and then they give it a thumbs up ordown. As soon as the band started, I already had a whole pile of songs prettymuch completely written so there was no shortage of material really. I thinkfrom this point on, everyone will be bringing songs to the band. We can allwrite so I’m excited to see what comes out!

CM: I know you guys have a lot going on with numerous compilations in theworks. Can you tell us a little about those comps and when we can expect themto hit the streets?

JH: We did Punk the Halls first, that onecame out in December. The next one up is called Give Back and it’s a benefitfor a wildlife center up north. We’re on that one with a bunch of great bands like Rations,Abolitionist, and Crusades. People can get it right now from 1859 Records.We’re contributing a song for this awesome Screeching Weasel tribute that willbe out in April with 27 bands on it. People can check our facebook page for thelink on where to get it once it’s out. There’s also a Death To False Hope compthat’s in the works right now. That will be a huge honor since they deal withso many great bands. There are two more that I think are for sure but I don’tthink I should say just yet. It’s really a lot of fun to be a part of all ofthese.

CM: Are there any plans on hitting the road for some shows this year? Maybe apossible tour?

JH: There’s no plans right now. We’re allsuper busy with “real world” stuff so that’s on the back burner for now.

CM: Jeff, I know you had a punk podcast called Needle Drop Radio that recentlycalled it a day. Any plans on getting back into the radio world in the nearfuture?

JH: Yeah, just ended it after two years.Even though it was one of the greatest things I’ve ever done, it was honestly alot of work so I’m not in a hurry to get back to any radio stuff. I won’t saynever, just nothing in the near future.

CM: How can fans and labels get in touch with the band? Is there a website youwanna plug?

Interview with After The Fact

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass guys. For those new to After The Fact, can you give us some history on the band and how you got started?

After The Fact: Hey man no problem! Thank you for taking the time to interview us and get to know a little bit about us! When we first started out Eric and Doug's old punk band, Code Zero, had just played their last show (circa 08) and I hadn't played in a band in almost a year (my last band before ATF! being Glory Daze) and was looking to start something new when Eric and Doug called me up about seeing if I wanted to come jam with them and do another punk band. I said hell yeah and we started jamming , we were based out of Doug's house up near downtown Fort Myers, we became a 3 piece and started writing songs. Eric playing bass, Doug playing drums and myself playing rhythm and lead guitar. After a little bit my best friend Allen Davies joined the band and played 2nd guitar and became our full time singer with Eric and myself doing back up vocals. After about a half of a year to a year later we had gone through numerous horn players and Allen had left the band to move to Nashville and pursue music production and business. It was then that we recruited our friend Casey Gartland of the band EVAK to sing for us, this was around winter of 09. It was about that same time another friends of ours, Paul Kalugdan of Withstand The Fire, joined the band playing guitar/trumpet and singing vocal harmonies finally completing and solidifying our lineup. Our sound has changed over the years from harder old school punk with extremely dirty vocals and grungy sounding guitar and bass to a melodic pop punk/ska sound I think we are very happy with now, being more vocally driven than we had initially anticipated and working more and more to strengthen our weaknesses as a band (both instrumentally and professionally between each other) while keeping it fun and focusing primarily on our strengths and most importantly having fun with all of our friends always and making our show a good time for all, no matter what age.

CM:Your newest release, "Super Scary Scenarios" came out last year, and I really enjoyed it. You guys have a great sound and the energy really comes out in the songs. Are there any plans on releasing new material this year?

ATF: Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! We are in the process right now of finishing up about 10 new demos with the help of our friend Rick of another local band(Ghost Dog Ela) that we will be sending off to Roger Lima from Less Than Jake/Moathouse Recording Studio up in Gainesville, FL and will hopefully start tracking everything sometime in April or May for what we intend (in time) to hopefully be our first full length, released later in the year with an EP of fun new demos sometime in the early summer to tide everyone over until the completion of the album.

CM: I can hear certain styles and sounds in the bands approach to playing music. Who are some of the bands musical influences?

ATF: All the members of ATF! have a varied Music Back ground everything from Metal,Hardcore,Too Indie and Punk,and Lots things in between.

As a band Id say our musical influence are definitely Less Than Jake, Jeffries Fan Club, Goldfinger, The Hippos, Dynamite Boy, Slick Shoes, Face to Face, Pulley, Lint, Gameface, Screeching Weasel and ALL.and even a little bit of the really poppy stuff like New Found Glory,and Blink 182.

CM: When it comes to the whole songwriting process is it a group effort or is there a primary songwriter?

ATF: Well since the beginning Eric and I write the majority of the lyrics and each of us have music and structures thought up for our own songs and then we bring them to the band and then after we get the structure down and tweak that we add in the dynamics and everyone adds their own take on their part into the song and develops their own part off the basis of the song structure and it becomes a song. Just lately though Paul has started bringing some songs he's written in and so has Doug (although previously Doug wrote "Maravilla")

At this point Casey comes in and puts his finishing touch on things, makes the vocals shine and bam another hit song done!

CM: Does the band play out a lot outside of your hometown of Fort Myers, FL? Or have you stayed somewhat local up til now?

ATF: We try to get outta town as much as possible because we have friends all over the state of Florida and its really good to get to see everyone! We all work alot though so alot of the time we play local shows and bring lots of bands thru here especially touring bands thru our home venue, Rack'em Billiards in Cape Coral, FL or Cool Hand Luc's in Fort Myers,FL and sometimes for Music Walk too behind our friend Andy Howl's Howl Gallery/Tattoo in downtown Fort Myers,FL. We are always about making sure the outta town bands get taken care of first and always make sure everyone has a blast!

CM: Are there any plans on hitting the road for some shows this year? Maybe a tour of the Midwest of the East Coast?

ATF: We would love to be able to get out of town more or even go on tour this summer but money is really what's holding us back from doing that right now. We will definitely try to make it out of the the state though by the end of this year and hopefully if not this year then definitely next year we will do an East Coast/Mid west tour for sure! Right now we try and take 3 day "MinoTours" (a pun on Mini-Tour and Minotaur's TASTE THE BEAST campaign from Role Models lol) around the state of FL usually to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, St.Pete/Tampa and back or the opposite way around. We wanna get into Gainesville and Orlando more and definitely up to Tallahassee too but we've been so busy bringing bands down thru here, playing festivals and recording we haven't had time to get back up there yet. But worry not! We will make it back up there definitely by summer!

CM: Eric, you were telling me that you guys heard Roger from Less Than Jake really liked your album, and if all goes well maybe he'll work with you guys on the new record. That's actually pretty awesome! Can you elaborate on that? Or is it too soon?

ATF: At first we got our Album to Chris (LTJ) and he liked it and thought we really sounded like we knew what we were going for. So that kind of made it easier too approach Roger. After he heard our new demos he said that he could make sure everything sounded sonically pleasing and capture the energy of our live show while still making a radio quality recording which is definitely what we wanna do! We are just waiting now to get the rest of these demos done which will be done by the end of the month and shipped off to Roger.

CM: Do you think there maybe a Less Than Jake/After The Fact tour in the near future?

ATF: Well I'd always hope for something like that. But I doubt it cause we still have a long way to go. We still need to get our merch together (t-shirts and what not) and probably a van that can tow our trailer and then save up some money before we can even attempt that. But playing with them on March 17th at the Durty Nelly's Block Party in Downtown St.Pete with A Wilhelm Scream and alot of our friends in other bands like Askultura, Escape Tonight, Trust for Liars and Burning Tree is definitely a start!

Music Reviews: The Rag N Bone Man - "4 Song Demo"

Growing up in Chicago it's hard not to have been fed, either by others or by your own hand, large amounts of blues music. It's part of what makes our city so great. The Chicago blues history is layered with so many talented artists who changed the game for so many bands to come. Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Do Diddley, Koko Taylor, Freddie King, Otis Rush, Little Walter, Elmore James...the list goes on for days! It was the Chicago blues that crept into the U.K. in the late 50's/early 60's that started what we now know as the British Invasion! Bands like the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, John Mayall, Humble Pie and early Peter Green/Jeremy Spencer era Fleetwood Mac were knee deep in the blues. So it comes as no surprise that the U.K. is STILL churning out amazing blues artists. And their newest prodigy is a one man band named The Rag N Bone Man!

The Rag N Bone Manplays a wide variety of modern day blues music on his new 4 track demo that you can hear on his Bandcamp site. The demo kicks off with a tune called "Savage". It's an in your face blast of dirty blues that's one part Little Walter kick ass harp, one part Jack White with a distortion laced vocal treatment pieced together with a killer finger picking and slide guitar riff that just brings it all together. It gives you a slight taste of what the rest of the EP will be like.

"Junkie In The Phone Box" has more of a clean sound, but still has enough dirt to make it worthy of the Mississippi Delta meets Chicago sound of the early 60's. The songs main character is strung out and doesn't have a chance in the world and neither does the kids she brings into her drug infested world. Great tune about the life of a junkie on a one way ride with a hellhound on her trail. Brilliant!

The last track is by far the biggest surprise on the EP. "Sunnycidal" kicks off with a palm muted riff and lyrics about sleeping pills and desperation before kicking in, for a short time, with a great beat and sharp sound. It's basically a topic and lyrical content that's not a far stretch from your typical blues tune. But what really stands out on this track is that The Rag N Bone Man has a really beautiful voice! It's sounds a little like Freddie Mercury on "Hammer Will Fall" without all the dramatic vocal layering that Queen was identified with. This EP has a little something for every blues fan. It's dirty, meat and potatoes music that the blue collar hard working man can identify with. I can't wait to hear MORE from The Rag N Bone Man.

Mooster Recordsis run and operated by Brandon Harrod who plays drums in the Chicago based garage rock band The Larroquettes. Brandon's vision is to release quality music to music lovers. Not specifically one style or genre of music either.

So far the label has released 2 of Harrod's solo releases, "Kuna For Dayzzzzz" and "Wide Open Sun", both of which are more along the lines of singer/songwriter meets Violent Femmes style than Harrod's hard rocking and garage based music with The Larroquettes. Up next on the labels roster is the new album by Nick Minnow "Plant Music (an untested hypothesis)" as well as Harrod's new "Karaoke Party". You can get both releases in digital format with hard copies coming shortly.

I spoke with Mr. Harrod yesterday and he describes Minnow's album as "an experimental rock free jazz concept album!" And I've heard the album, and it's quite mind blowing to say the least. It's very original in it's style and complexity. Any music lover with an open mind will definitely dig this album. My review of the record will be coming shortly to Critical Mass. But in the meantime I suggest you check it out at Minnow's bandcamp page.

2012 is looking to be a big year for Mooster Records, and the entire Critical Mass family couldn't be more happy. We'll be here reporting on all things Mooster Records as they become available. Music Reviews: Goin' Places - "Relationship Sneakers"

Remember when punk rock WASN'T about going to Hot Topic for nut hugger skinny jeans and fruity emo haircuts? When it was all about being who we are instead of trying to be something you're not? It pretty much started with the Ramones in the 70s and ended with them in '97. Sure, there have been the occasional exception to the rule. But mostly it's been all about fashion and bandwagon jumping since. Now there's a band who coming out of retirement to bring it all back t where it should have stayed all along....on the streets!

Goin' Places started out in 2000 and were one of those bands who didn't do what was expected in order to make a quick buck riding the punk rock bandwagon that was oh so popular at that time. They were students of old school pop punk. They liked the Ramones, but also followed bands like The Queers, Mr. T Experience and Screeching Weasel. They released one record ("Girl Songwriting 101") in 2002, toured shortly and dropped out of the scene to get real jobs. But they never gave up the dream of one day making music again on their own terms. And NOW is that time!

"Relationship Sneakers" (Bright & Borrow Records) is 15 catchy gems in the style of all things pop punk. This album could have come out in the early 90s and been neck and neck with "Love Songs For The Retarded" and "Wiggle". It's just a fun record. "Be With Me" is a cool tune about being just friends with a girl who you really dig, only to get drunk and spill the beans and find out she doesn't feel the same way. We've been there. And that's why I can identify with this track. So good! Throw in a wicked keyboard solo in the vein of "Let's Dance" by the Ramones, and you have instant classic stamped all over it!

"Tongue Tied", "Bedroom Window" and "Relationship Sneakers" all have some really kick ass harmonies and will have you hooked in seconds. There is just so much going on with this band, musically and lyrically, and it's all brought together in a sunny fun way. The band. Richie (guitar/vocals), Victor (drums/vocals) and Frank (bass) write and play songs that will make you remember why we love pop punk in the first place. They take you away from all your problems and bring you to a place filled with harmony, good times and fun!

"Just Another Girl Song" could have been on the Queers classic album "Don't Back Down" and "Goin' Places" is as close to a Ramones classic as we're gonna get. But they do it with dignity and respect for the bands who have inspired them. They don't rip off as much as pay tribute to the greats of the past and present.

"I Love You Girl" is damn close to being the best tune on the record. It's pretty much an instrumental, besides the "Oh oh oh" sing along and the title track said only once at the very end. "Gum Would Be Perfection" IS a full instrumental track but it's done so well that the music sings it's self without words. You have to hear it to really get what I'm saying.

The album closes with a tribute to our fallen hero's, Joey Johnny and Dee, as well as the Ramones as a band! There have been tribute tunes in the past. But none that can hold a candle to this track. We'll never forget what they gave us and what they continue to do even after 15 years away. There's also a hidden track that comes in at around the 14 minute mark that you need to hear. If your sensitive to foul language you may wanna skip the hidden track altogether. But all in all this is a great album. And I'm glad to have this band back after being away for so long.

Interview with The Creeping Ivies

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass. For those new to The Creeping Ivies, can you give us some history on the band and how you got started?

The Creeping Ivies: We are Becca Bomb (vox.guitar) and Duncan Destruction (drums) and we formed the band late 2010. We are friends and met a couple of years before at a gig Becca was playing at with another band. Duncan briefly joined this previous band just before we split up but shortly that after we formed the Creeping Ivies.

We spent a lot of time initially in the rehearsal studio just playing and practicing and started doing gigs later in 2011. We released one of our tracks 'Shake It Up' on a couple of cool compilation records (GRG PNK Records and Dead By Mono) and then recorded our debut 3 track EP Rock N Roll Party which was released in November 2011.

CM: Your newest release, "Rock N Roll Party EP", came out this past November, as you stated, and is really well done. Anyone into garage rock will really dig this EP! Are there any plans on releasing new material this year?

TCI: Thanks! This was our first recording together so it was quite exciting for us to get something out there. We've also been finding our feet and we're growing as a band all the time so there's a lot of new songs being written. So, yeah, we're pretty keen to get new stuff recorded, we're already planning a second EP for later this year. Details of this are to be confirmed soon!

CM: Who are some of the bands musical influences?

TCI: Artists we love are Bo Diddley, The Cramps, Link Wray, The Ramones, Velvet Underground, The Clash, Elvis, New York Dolls, The Sonics, Hasil Adkins, Iggy Pop, the list goes on and on, we have a lot of varied personal influences but as a band we're inspired by wild rock n roll and music you can bop to.

CM: The band is still somewhat new, since you formed recently. Have you guys played together in any other bands in the past?

TCI: Becca had a couple of bands before (Trash Superstar and The Leatherettes). The latter was a duo and we used a drum machine but Duncan briefly joined us on drums near the end although we never played a gig as a three piece. We also have a club night together called FEVER where we play our favourite Rock n Roll Vinyl records so we share a mutual love for the music.

CM: When it comes to the whole songwriting process is it a group effort or is there a primary songwriter?

TCI: Becca writes all the songs then brings them to rehearsals where we just take it from there. Sometimes we just have a loose jam and improvise and Becca will maybe work on that later and sort out the lyrics. Sometimes lyrics don't get written until the night before a gig!

CM: Being a duo and not having a bass player is somewhat unheard of. Originally, was it planned out to just be a guitar and drums only band? And will there be a bass player added later on?

TCI: No, we never seen this as an issue at all. We always planned to be stripped back and raw. We wouldn't rule out working with other musicians in the future but its not something we're thinking about at the moment. Its less people to have to worry about and less people to piss you off. We're primitive. We're basically the rock n roll Flintstones.

CM: Does the band play out a lot in your area?

TCI: We only started playing live last year so we're beginning to get a few gigs under our belt. Our first show we put on as a party of our Rock N Roll night FEVER. We played a show with Viv Albertine of The Slits last year and will be playing with Vic Godard & Subway Sect next Month. We're getting involved with some other local bands and will be putting on a few gigs here and there.

CM: Are there any plans on hitting the road for some shows this year? Maybe a possible tour of the United States at some point?

TCI: We will travel further a field this year and hopefully we'll get some opportunities to play bigger audiences. We want to spread the rock n roll germ and Tear it up everywhere. We would love to do a tour of the US, that's the dream.

CM: How can fans and labels get in touch with the band? Is there a website you guys wanna plug?

Music Reviews: The Heat Tape - "The Heat Tape"

Over the years bands who have made a name for themselves have had members who wanna branch out and release an album of their own. Or form a side project that reflects who they are as individuals. Sometimes these solo albums and side projects work. Other times they fall flat and show little resemblance of the greatness of their day job. This is NOT the case with Brett Hunter, guitarist of Carbondale, IL favorite sons The Copyrights. Hunter, who has not one but TWO side projects, has just released the self titled 7" from his band The Heat Tape (Underground Communique Records). And it's a damn good release.

For close to 10 years Hunter has been a part of the greatness that is The Copyrights, releasing 5 full length albums along with a handful of singles and splits. The Heat Tape are a trio from Makanda, IL who play a little more grittier and lo-fi than The Copyrights or Hunters OTHER band Dear Landlord. But the 4 songs on this 7" are equally as effective and strong. The band Hunter, Brooks Davey and Ben Bleyer play more of a garage style of dirty punk rock. And it really works for them.

"Love And Sweat" is a great tune about having fun while you still can. And try to remember the years are not slowing down for any of us. We gotta get while the gettings good! "Freebird" should have been called "Freedom" since it's all about not being locked up and being able to do as you please. I guess at the end of the day the 4 songs on this amazing EP are all about living for today and enjoying what you have because it may not be there tomorrow. A wonderful philosophy to live by in this day and age! No matter who you are, what your background is and how financially stable you may or may not be...we can STILL have fun and be carefree, even for a short time. And The Heat Tape remind us of that.

Music Reviews: After The Fact - "Super Scary Scenarios" EP

After The Fact are a new band from Fort Myers, FL who play an infectious brand of ska punk and like having fun. The bands debut EP "Super Scary Scenarios" (Route 8 Records) is loaded with catchy riffs and hooks, a good beat, great vocals and or course horns! The band has a sound similar to that of Less Than Jake, but at the same time have their own style of songwriting.

This incredible EP kicks off with "Stuck" and fun track about being, well, STUCK! But it could be about being stuck anywhere...in a bad relationship, a dead end job, your hometown...anywhere! And the sound bites from "Office Space" just add to the good times. Who knew being stuck in a rut could be so much fun!

"This Time" has an all killer no filler opening guitar riff and harmonies that make this track an instant favorite for this listener. Singer Casey Gartland has a really good voice and he lets it shine all over this track (and all 6 tracks on this album, actually). His vocals never strain or overpower the other players on the album. They all just gel so well together.

"Frustrated" kicks off with an old school bass riff that goes into a great horn sound and we're off and running! Gang style vocals galore and a heavy groove make this another stand out track. I can't get enough of this album!

The band is tight as fuck. Guitarist Tim Tim is a great player who can play heavy riff solos and then play a beautiful acoustic song like "Maravilla" without a hitch. This kids got talent! The rhythm section of Big E (bass) and Dougie Fresh (drums) along with Paul Kalugdan (trumpet/guitar) just gel so well together. And along with Gartland bring the good times without tripping over each other musically. Bring these guys together and you have a great band who play energetic summer friendly music. Just when you thought this style of music has grown old and stale, After The Fact bring it all home with a fresh sound and show that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.

Music Reviews: Dot Dash - "Spark>Flame>Ember>Ash"

Dot Dash, who hail from Washington D.C., can best be described as an alternative band who play jangly pop blasts in the vein of The Cure and The Smiths. Now, normally I wouldn't touch a band like this with a ten foot pole. But something just caught me off guard with this band. Maybe it's the infectious style of playing? Maybe it's the rolling backbeat? Maybe it's the smooth vocal styling's? The quality of the songwriting? ALL of the above? It's hard to pinpoint when they took hold of my attention span and refused to let go.

Dot Dash are a fierce 4 piece that consist of singer/guitarist/main songwriter Terry Banks, guitarist Bill Crandall, bassist Hunter Bennett and drummer Danny Ingram. These 4 gentlemen are seasoned professionals and it shows on tracks like "The Color And The Sound" and "That Was Now, This Is Then" from their latest album Spark>Flame>Ember>Ash (The Beautiful Music). The album has an almost English feel to it and is very much 1984 in it's approach. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. I mean hey, if you have a knack for something different and tasteful, go for it!

"Alright, Alright" has hit record written all over it with it's soft vocal's going into falsetto towards the end, it just makes you feel good. It's a short tune, but great none the less. Being a music lover I find so much good in this album. If you grew up loving 180 Minutes on MTV this is a great album to pick up. Some music just don't go out of style. And, like I said before, this particular style isn't really my cup of tea...but this band just has SOMETHING that will make you take notice and listen. The records pop sensibility and fine execution make this a must have for any 80s alternative music lover who still love to be different and wanna stand out in a crowd of hipsters and phonies. Be yourself and let it ride. That's what I get from Dot Dash. Well, that AND some really great music.

Interview with Tyrus Thompson from Stop Drop

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass. For anyone new to Stop Drop, can you give us a little history on the band and how you guys got together?

Tyrus Thompson: Stop Drop started playing together about a year ago. It was formed by myself and Connor who were already playing together in the ska band 2 Tone Runts. I was looking for an outlet for songs that didn't fit the 2TR style and we both wanted to tour more. Brody was a co-worker of mine and I brought him in after jamming a few times. Brooklynn knew Connor because they were both local trombone players and she was looking for more gigs. We are currently working in a new trombone player, Tony Beaderstadt, into the mix. He played with us in 2 Tone Runts. We recorded our first EP, Stop Drop Is Distracted, together last spring and summer in our rehearsal space and released it for free download in August.

CM: I recently reviewed the bands album "Is Distracted" and enjoy your mix of acoustic pop with a reggae feel. Who are some of the bands musical influences?

TT: Jamaican rhythms have always been a major influence from Toots and the Maytals to The Skatalites. I would also say modern bands like Against Me! and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists as well as legends like The Replacements and The Clash. When I'm listening to records at home I jump all over the place spanning multiple genres like folk to pop to ska to punk to RnB. The daily struggles of the working class and the fight for equality and justice to just growing up and trying to make my voice heard as well as all the teachers who ignored me or said I couldn't make it have all pushed me to keep going and spreading music.

CM: Now, the band is currently unsigned right? Has any labels, indie or otherwise, contacted you about possibly releasing some material in the future? Or will you continue to release your own material?

TT: We wanted to release something for free which is why we went the D.I.Y. route with "Is Distracted." We feel like in this modern age of home studios and accessible online distribution that band don't need labels. Labels need bands. That being said, if the right offer were to come around we may consider it but it's not a priority to us.

CM: As far as songwriting goes, is it a group effort or is there a primary songwriter in the group?

TT: I'll come to practice with an outline for a song and the rest of the band will help polish it up. We might jam on it a couple times to find which ever arrangement comes naturally. When I write, it's generally when I'm home alone on my guitar or organ. I try to start with a chorus. Usually with a melody and lyrics that may have been in my head all day. The hook can be the hardest part. From there I'll find a chord structure for the verse. I try not to force the first verse and chorus. If I get stuck, I move on to the next song. Once I have a chorus and first verse, I might move on and write the rest of the lyrics and the bridge later. Other times I might just vomit up a whole song at once like with the Tour Song, which I think I wrote in less than 20 minutes.

CM: You have a great song on "Is Distracted" called Tour Song which I love! And the band hails from Minneapolis, MN. Now is Tour Song autobiographical? Has the band been out on tour in the past?

TT: I've been touring with bands for a while now. Stop Drop started touring the Midwest last spring and we did two weeks on the East Coast with Detroit based band Matt Wixson's Flying Circus in August. Touring is probably one of my favorite things to do. It's when I'm the most happy. I don't like being a tourist though. Traveling for me is much more enjoyable when there are people waiting to see you at every city. I like staying with strangers and meeting new friends and other bands. I like the long hours on the road and waking up somewhere else.

CM: Are there any plans to take the show on the road in 2012?

TT: You will start seeing us traveling around the Midwest again this spring. We have a bunch of shows in the works. We plan on doing even more touring this year to different places then we have been. We'll play everything from concert venues to coffee shops to basements. Hit us up if and we'll do our best to make it out to where ever you may be.

CM: Will we be seeing any new releases, full lengths, singles, 7"s or splits in the near future?

TT: We've got a lot of new songs in the works and will start demoing them this summer. No current plans for when or how they will be released. I would love to get something out on vinyl.

CM: Is there a website where fans get up to date news on upcoming releases, gigs and merch?

Music Reviews: P.T.'s Revenge - "Never Let Her Go"

After a decade of being off the scene and doing other projects Detroit's P.T.'s Revenge are back with "Never Let Her Go" (Whoa! Records). Even though last year saw the release of "Save The Drama" this is actually the first release of ALL NEW material by this amazing band. This 4 song EP is a sure fire sign of things to come.

The album kicks off with "Rockstar" a song about having to go out on the road and leaving behind your day to day life, friends and loved ones. Anyone who's been fortunate enough to get out there and tour will be able to identify with this song and it's honest lyrics. It's a strong song and a great way to kick off what's soon to be a classic record.

"JNJ" is an ode to a friend who's got talent and drive who "deserves everything that he gets when he dreams" even if his confidence isn't necessarily all there. I don't know who this person in question is, and the band won't come right out and give a name, but let's just say this person must be one hell of a guy to have such a great song dedicated to him and his fight to be the best he can be. A real barn burner, folks!

The band is still pretty much in tact after years away. Singer Kevin Sierzega is hitting each note perfectly and is truly a force to be reckoned with. He's a great singer with a passion for his craft. Mathew Edwards and Chris Doerr have a twin guitar sound that brings so much to the table without trying to outdo each other. And the rhythm section of bassist Jeff Sierzega and drummer John Kay are so tight and precise and hold the music together with professionalism and accuracy.

The album closes with a great song called "Coo Later Bye". This is a song about what the bands lived through the first time around, the break up, the reforming and the good times that still lay ahead! This is definitely the "heart on sleeve" track of the year. It's a tribute to the common bond these guys have and they're mutual love of the music they play and the fans they play for. When Kevin sings "We'll say goodbye, but not tonight!" all I can think of is how great it is to have them back. And I HOPE they don't say goodbye anytime soon. I'm sure I speak for all the fans when I say "welcome back gentlemen!"

Music News: Iggy Pop News!

The world has just become a cooler place! The Godfather of punk, the one and only Iggy Pop, has officially become Record Store Day Ambassador for 2012 according to the RSD website. In a prepared statement, "The Worlds Forgotten Boy" said...

"A person should have a personality. You won't get one dicking around on a computer. It helps to go somewhere where there are other persons. Persons who are interested in something you are. That's how a record store or any shop that's got some life to it should work. It's not about selling shit. I got my name, my musical education and my personality all from working at a record store during my tender years. Small indie shops have always been a mix of theater and laboratory. In the 50's and 60's the teen kids used to gather after school at these places to listen free to the latest singles and see if they liked the beat. You could buy the disc you liked for 79 cents and if you were lucky meet a chick. Clerks in these places became managers, (like Brian Epstein), label heads, (Jack Holzman) and Faces on album covers (like me). Personally I feel best in a store that, while staying small and socially relaxed, still keeps a complete variety of music types and non musical recordings on offer. I'm aware though that a lot of great places are genre-specific, like dance hall shops in Jamaica or Compas here in Little Haiti. In Europe and on the West coast the same goes on for Punk and Goth. All of this is cool and has a much bigger future than most people realize today. When the record and record store businesses began to die at the turn of the new century, they deserved it because they got too big too boring and too plastic.

Music News: Hopewrecker Seek Label To Release Debut 7"

Recently I was contacted by Jeff Hancock from the band Hopewrecker asking if I would be interested in reviewing his bands, as of yet unreleased, 3 song EP. And I gladly agreed. Upon hearing the 3 songs, I couldn't help but be blown away by how great the band were and how well crafted and executed the songs are. I remember thinking to myself "Wow, these guys are really good! I can't wait to get my hands on this EP." That's when I realized that would be impossible...for NOW at least! You see, the band is currently unsigned and don't have a label to release this monster 7" of great punk rock! And that's why we need YOUR help!

The band started out in 2011 after Jeff, who also hosts his own punk rock pod cast called Needle Drop Radio, wrote some amazingly clever punk rock songs and needed an equally amazing band to help see his vision turned into a reality. So he recruited Wal Rashidi, Guy Julian and Jon Kurtz and Hopewrecker was born.

Hopewrecker have had their songs released on two charity compilations alongside bands like Civil War Rust, Why I Hate, Lipstick Homicide, MxPx, The Haddonfields, Jetty Boys. And the band currently has about an albums worth of material already recorded. The 3 songs I heard are super catchy and musically fantastic. I'm shocked that these guys haven't been picked up yet. "Nightcrawler", "Farm Invasion" and "Planet Of The Year" stand toe to toe with anything coming out of the punk scene in the last 10 years. It's TRULY that good!

"Nightcrawler" starts out with a galloping bass and drum beat then kick in with Jeff's vocals over a killer guitar riff and it takes flight with smart lyrics and a harmonizing chorus that's just top notch punk rock! And if after listening to "Planet Of The Year" you don't think it's a monster hit waiting to happen, I'll pack up the plantation and close Critical Mass down. I believe in it THAT much! This is, as of right now, the top pick for EP of the year at Critical Mass.

Music News: The Enders Get ready to Record New Album!

According to singer/guitarist Ben Hagood, The Enders will be hitting the studio in March to start work on the bands first full length album. The still yet untitled album will be released on Unrepentant Records in late spring. And the band has posted the lyrics to most of the new songs on their Facebook page. So far things are looking up for this amazing Lafayette, IN trio who just signed with Unrepentant recently. Music Reviews: The Creeping Ivies - "Rock N Roll Party EP"

For any fans of Little Steven's Underground Garage or Howie Pyro's Intoxica Radio, which both feature amazing garage rock from the 50's up to the current day, will sure dig this new garage band from Scotland called The Creeping Ivies. The bands new "Rock N Roll Party EP" is 3 short burst of garage greatness made for people who find beauty in the simplicity of rock n roll.

The band, Becca Bomb (vocals/guitar) and Duncan Destruction (drums), mix sonic rock n roll,ala The Stooges, and mix in surf guitar riffs to make one hell of ruckus on the opening track "Buggin' Around" and the fun never slows down. Becca has a seasoned vocal styling that's part Patti Smith anger, part Big Mama Thorton attitude. Duncan finds the simple rhythm that fits the songs and just keeps that formula for these 3 tracks. Hey, why fix it if it's not broken, right?

"Head To Tail" is my favorite track on the album, and the longest track at 3:16. It's got a great beat and infectious guitar lines in the vein of Link Wray. But it's truly Becca's amazingly strong vocals that really carry these songs. She's got the passion and the fire in her delivery that will make you swoon and cower all at the same time. She's a feisty one, that's for sure.

With so many bands making clean, overly produced albums, it's nice to see that the simple joys of plugging in and letting go are still enjoyable for some bands. My advice, get back INTO the garage and rediscover how great dirty, blues and surf infected rock n roll can be.

Music Reviews: Brendan Kelly And The Wandering Birds - "A Man With The Passion Of Tennessee Williams"

Brendan Kelly has been a rather busy guy as of late. He co-hosts a Chicago based TV show called JBTV with Red Scare founder Toby Jeg, has played some shows with his band The Lawrence Arms, reformed for a one off gig with his old band Slapstick for Asian Man Records 10th anniversary, opened up for Naked Raygun during Thanksgiving week with his side project The Falcon and has just released a new 3 song EP called "A Man With The Passion Of Tennessee Williams" (Red Scare) backed by a band he calls The Wandering Birds.

This new single may have some old Arms and Falcon fans crying foul, because this isn't what you would expect from the man who gave us "Porno And Snuff Films" and "La-Z-Boy 500". But I welcome change, and I'll tell you why. The new single is a departure from what BK normally does. Sure it's punk rock, but with a twist. The title track kicks off with what sounds like a drum machine before Brendan's signature gravely vocals come in sounding somewhat tired. But the song picks up with catchy guitar riffs, his signature style of lyrical babbling with lyrics like "I'm hot for teacher and the rhetoric. I'm hot for the well spoken mechanic. I'm hot like the gritty desert sand, man. I'm hot like Hawaiian Tropic tan's, man" and a crazy vocal effect chorus where Brendan sings "I ain't leaving till I get my fill". It's different, but I dig it!

Up next is the more upbeat and familiar BK we all know and love with "I'd Rather Die Than Live Forever". It's down and dirty production wise. But fast and lean at the same time. A real classic for modern times. Again, it's got the killer guitar riffs and a great backbeat that'll make you wanna fuckin just tear shit up!

Now it gets a little tricky. The last song isn't really a departure musically, as much as it is lyrically. "Suffer The Children, Come Unto Me" is a musically gorgeous acoustic track with Brendan completely solo with just his guitar in hand. But when you listen to the lyrics, you'll find it's a one sided song about killing children from a killers eyes. This will surely piss some people off. But if you really take it for what it is, it's a story being told by a story teller. Kinda like Stephen King with a guitar. I see that Brendan isn't condoning this type of behavior. He's just singing a song about how fucked up some people in this world are. But, to be honest, I think it's the best track on the album. Brendan sings and plays wonderfully. Sure it's sick and twisted...but not all stories have a happy ending...and that's what a storyteller does, tells you a story. Where YOU take that story is solely up to you.

All in all I am pleasantly surprised and happy with how this solo offering came out. Tip of the old hat to Brendan with hopes that this won't be the only new material he get from this talented singer/songwriter this year.

Interview with CHaMOMILE

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass guys. For those who may be new to CHaMOMILE can you give us a little history on the band and how you guys got together?

BOTH: We Started in 2009 to play a show with some friends, it wasn't really serious. We just wanted to play a show with them. We had two days to put a set list together and pull it off. It was what it was. CHaMOMILE wans't really serious, it was just a chance to play that show. We just kind of kept going and kept getting offered shows. We never tried to be popular, it just kind of happened.

JON: I've been in and out of bands for a long time...

CHRIS: I was in a band called the HOMERS during high school. I just decided to buy a kit to put in my basement after college.

JON: Being brothers we have played music on and off again together, since...4th grade or something. We both have the same drive, interest, styles etc... It just made sense to play in a band together.

CM: Your newest release is called "5 Year Nightmare" which refers to your drummers battle with cancer. First off, how is he doing?

JON:Fine?

CHRIS: I recently just passed five years remission, and i feel better than ever. It's just the bills that kill, playing music is a good way to forget about that whole mess.

CM: Do any of the songs on the album reflect Chris' battle and his strength to get better?

JON: No, not really. Five year Nightmare was a band name we were throwing around before CHaMOMILE.

CM: Is the songwriting process a group effort or do each of you bring your own songs to the group?

JON: I write the songs, He writes the Drums. I give most the ideas and sometimes I have the full song to bring and sometimes we just hash it out.

CM: I love the bands sound and DIY ethic. Who influenced you guys as a musical unit?

BOTH: Thanks, our biggest influence was probably Mid-West local punk bands. Psycho Nubs, Dry Rot...Those guys have been and still are really fucking cool to us.

CHRIS: 80's punk rock, Screeching Weasel, Social Distortion.

JON: Definitely Bad Religion..Sonic Youth, Big Black.

CM: Will the band continue to release it's own material? Or are you guys gonna shop around for an indie label at some point?

CHRIS: I don't know, is that how you get a label? I thought they found you...

JON: I don't know how it works.

CHRIS: We just play to have fun. We had a four track and we could just do everything ourselves...

JON: Until it caught on fire.

CM: Do you guys play out much? And are there any plans for a tour in the near future?

JON: We did at first, but then it was getting to be a bit much. We kind of went into the basement and I wouldn't say re-wrote everything..just kind of wood-shedded. Came up with better songs.

CHRIS: Right now we try to play once a month, but our vehicle situation is pretty fucked.

JON: I think a tour could be expected and more shows...if things work out this year financially.

CM: Will we be seeing any new material in 2012?

JON: Definitely. As long as we have instruments and a place to play, we'll play.

CHRIS: We can write a song in less than an afternoon, we come up with new songs all the time.

BOTH: A new record is already in the works.

CM: Is there a website you guys wanna plug where we can get up to date news on upcoming releases, gigs and merch?

BOTH: Facebook I guess. One of us usually checks on it everyday.

"My Personal Top 10" - Marien Nicotine of The Windowsill

Today's featured artist is the lead singer and guitarist for one of the best new punk bands around, The Windowsill. He's also a former member of The Apers. Add to that, he's a HUGE Thin Lizzy fan. Here with HIS Personal Top 10 reasons why Thin Lizzy and the bands late lead singer/bassist Phil Lynott are one of the greatest bands ever is Mr. Marien Nicotine! Take us into the weekend, Marien!

Chris asked me to do a top 10 on something I really liked. I decided to do it about Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy. I have been a huge fan of Thin Lizzy for years, and I’m advising everybody to study this band intensively and love them… No, not really… just do what you want to do (wink), but you may want to take it in account some day.

Although The Windowsill doesn’t sound like Thin Lizzy at all, except for a twin solo here and there, I am influenced by this band a lot. Because of the sound, the great tell-tale lyrics, the hard songs and the ballads and for generally being the coolest ever. I will try and tell you why.

Some are musical, some are not but they deserve to be in here.

And remember this top10 is my just my personal opinion.

1 His hair

Phil has the best hair in a rock band ever (and mustache btw).

I asked Sander to play second guitar in The Windowsill because he can sing higher than me, play guitar at a good level, but also because his hair looks a little like Phil’s…You see?

… on top of that, Jerry’s hair looks like Scott Gorham’s…

… and unfortunately I guess I’ll probably look like Eric Bell (Founding member) in a couple of years…

2 The cover for the album Fighting…

It’s like any other punkrock cover, I mean: jeans, leather jackets, 4 guys standing almost in front of a brick wall, trying to look cool. Only there is one essential difference with your ordinary punkrock cover; where the Ramones only sang about baseball bats, Phil actually brought one, and is ready to fuck shit up. And if Phil isn’t the one fucking shit up it could easily be Brian Downey with the iron bar, or Brian Robertson with the knife… So watch out!

Scott Gorham just brought himself by the way, I guess he doesn’t need a weapon…

3 The absurd amount of internal rhyme, end rhyme in a lot of songs

Phil Lynott got some criticism for the never ending rhyming-galore, and for always going for the easy rhymes. I don’t agree at all….

Once I toured the UK with The Apers when some guy told me a story about how he hated Thin Lizzy, but loved the fact that Phil, being a heroin addict, was married to the daughter of England’s most famous tv personalities Leslie Crowther, who hated the fact that his daughter was married to Phil because he was a junkie and black. At least, that is what this random guy in England told me…

(Later, Phil and the daughter got separated, and Leslie turned out to be a crazy alcoholic, so there was a little bit of ‘pot calling the kettle black’ stuff going on there, but who cares.)

5 Guitar harmonies

I don’t want to claim Thin Lizzy invented that harmonious solo guitar stuff, because I can’t have a lot of Iron Maiden fans hunting me down and doing all kinds of crazy metal stuff to me, but…Thin Lizzy was doing this very early.

This is just too cool. If you can write a song to such a hard beat, you must be a genius. Bear with me here, I am a very limited musician and I usually think everything is hard when it comes to playing the drums or the guitar. I can imagine Pink Floyd experimenting with such a beat, but Thin Lizzy does it too, without making it seem hard.

8. Johnny Thunders

Johnny Thunders recorded his first solo album ‘So Alone’ with Phil on bass in England.

Phil really was a big fan of the whole punk rock movement, you can read that anywhere on the net. He gave away songs to punk bands and wore Swastika’s to parties. Played pinball with Lemmy and hung out and drank a beer. Sounds exactly like me when I was young, except for the swastika part.

9. Black

Did I mention Phil was black? In a world of hard rock dominated by white guys he was something different. So I was thinking, there should be a comic book series about him, together with Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry and Lenny Kravitz called the BL-AXE-men, (get it?, they are black and play guitar and it’s a play on X-men…)

They would fight horrible evil white musicians like Nickelback and Creed… And they would pick on Lenny all the time, as a comic relief for the series…

Man, if Stan Lee doesn’t pick up this idea after reading this, I don’t know who will…

Interview with Dan Vapid And Mike Byrne of Dan Vapid & The Cheats

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass guys. I really appreciate it.

Dan Vapid: You're welcome!

CM: So the album is officially recorded and you guys are in the mixing stages now. When can we expect a release date?

DV: I don't know yet. We are talking with some labels right now, so whoever gives the best offer will be the one who puts out the record. So, right now what I really wanna do is finish up everything. It's 16 songs and we may use all 16 songs. We may not. But we'll definitely use 14. But when it's all mastered we'll figure out what label will release it. And I'm thinking we'll have the record out by early next year. probably January or February.

Mike Byrne: In the past our records were done slowly. But with this one, we went in and it was finished.

DV: Yeah, and we've already started the cover so, I think once we figure out who's gonna release it it should be a pretty quick process.

CM: Mike, you were telling me that this is some of the best material Dan's ever written. How do you feel this album compares, musically, to what you did in The Methadones?

MB: Well this record has such a wide variety of songs. I mean Dan pretty much had all these songs written before we even started this band. And the band would pretty much set the tone for what the album would sound like. So, like with The Methadones, the songs he would write would sound like The Methadones. And Sludgeworth songs would sound like Sludgeworth. So with this time he wrote some cool punk songs, some power pop songs, some new wave style songs and some Ramones style songs. And it's just a really cool record.

DV: Yeah with The Methadones we tried to make a conscience effort to not sound like the bands we were in before The Methadones. This time I'm doing Dan Vapid & The Cheats and it was like let's just write a record and see what happens. With The Methadones it was a case of "okay, we don't wanna sound like these other bands." And by doing that I kinda missed this whole idea of writing what came naturally. Not that those songs didn't come naturally. It did. But you would just kinda suppress that side. And now I'm just kinda over that whole thing. If it sounds like a Screeching Weasel song, that's fine. If it sounds like a Riverdales song, that's fine. And if it sounds like a Methadones song, that's fine. I'm just gonna roll with it and realize that the goal is to have as much fun as I can making the best music I can.

CM: When the album comes out, will it be released on vinyl?

DV: Yeah, I'll make sure of that.

CM: Colored vinyl?

DV: Colored vinyl, just for you!

CM: SWEET! What can we expect from Dan Vapid & The Cheats in 2012?

DV: Well, in 2012 we got offers to go to Spain. We got offers to go to Italy. We got offers to go to Canada. So we just have to figure out what we CAN do and see if it happens.

MB: We definitely have plans to tour.

DV: We have some plans to maybe go to the east coast. I'm a stay at home dad. I just had a baby so my time is a lot more limited. So I'm hoping to just try and do this while I can do it. Obviously things have changed from the way they used to be from like...

CM: Piling in a van and here we go?

DV: Yeah. We're a little bit older now you know.

MB: If we get to play Detroit or in Indiana we'll go. But I'm also limited in my time too with my job. Dan's the same. But with The Methadones we would do a pretty big tour. And it was good for us. But now we can't go out for weeks at a time and tour.

DV: It's like what can you do at this point in life. You know I'm not 24 anymore and we can't tour on end. So now we gotta see what works for us where we're at in life. And I think we're doing that really well. And I think it's gonna be a lot more fun now because when we do what we do, it's fun. If it's fun and we're having fun, we'll do it. But we can still be an active band and I can still be a dad and I can still balance it out.

MB: We realized when Dan started this band it was gonna be called Dan Vapid so we knew it was gonna be a fun show. We kinda wanted to try and musically remind people of the old band. But we also wanna try and do something new and fun. It doesn't have to sound like anything we already did. And if the stuffs fun we'll just do it. In the past it was almost like a job where we're like okay let's go punch the clock and do the show. It's no fun feeling like that.

DV: For me, based on what happened is that I got frustrated a lot because I wanted to take us to the next level but it just wasn't in the cards for us for whatever reason. So it kinda ruined the moment for me because it was like "It SHOULD be like this. We SHOULD be doing a lot better." Y'know this time around we know what should be done and to just accept the situation. And really just enjoy the band and try and make the best music we can and just have some fun. So what happened with The Methadones was we kept trying to go to the next level and trying to push that square peg into the circle and it just didn't work. But now the goal is no matter what we do is to just be a band and enjoy it.

MB: Back then, in Europe, we would play these great tours shows and then we would come home and we were just burnt out. We were all burnt out at different times. When I was burnt out from touring those guys were good. And then Dan was burnt out when we were coming back into it. So it was hard to tour as much as we would have liked. And it was just that way for the last 3 or 4 years. And that's just where we were at. We just kinda got as far as we could get. So in the end there was no one saying "Oh lets stick it out." We all just kind of agreed to it (The Methadones disbanding).

DV: I think it just ran it's course.

MB: When the whole Weasel thing fell apart the owner from Cobra Lounge sent me a text asking me if I thought Dan would be interested in doing a show that weekend that would have been Weasel Fest. And I told Dan "Hey, I'll play guitar for you and you can keep all the money." I have a job and Dan was out of work at the time so I'm sure he would have done the same thing for me. But he had to think about it for a few weeks.

DV: Yeah, I really didn't wanna do it at first. Actually I didn't wanna do anything at all. I mean, everybody knows what happened with Screeching Weasel and what a catastrophe that was. And when I got home I was thinking well, The Methadones didn't happen, and this didn't happen....maybe it's time to just stop. And then I said hey, wait a minute, I really don't wanna stop. I just realized, hey, lets try and forget about trying to take this thing to another level. Trying to make this thing happen. If it's not meant to be, it's not meant to be. It's really that simple. Lets just go out there and try and enjoy the moment like we used to. Now I feel like this band symbolizes a new beginning, a new way and a different attitude.

MB: I'll tell you, that very first rehearsal with this band was the most fun I have ever had playing ever! We played Methadones songs, Mopes songs...it was just a lot of fun. And Dan was playing with Simon (Lamb, The Cheats bassist) before. And Simon and I were playing in the Cliff Johnson band. So for years Simon and I would talk about getting a band going too. So when Dan and Simon and Mike asked me to play it was just a fun idea.

DV: And I didn't wanna do a whole Methadones thing either. But when Mike called me and said that he was willing to play guitar it just seemed right. I mean he knows all the songs already anyway. So I just called Simon and see if he was interested and stuff like that. And then it came down to drummers. And we got Mike (Soucy). And at first it was like why is this like The Methadones with another bass player? And it's really not that band!

CM: When I interviewed Naked Raygun not too long ago, Pete (Mittler) had nothing but great things to say about you guy's He's really happy.

DV: I think he was thought at first "oh, well it had to be me". But he knows that it really wasn't that way at all.

MB: As far as Simon went, I mean Dan was playing with him, and I was already playing with him in the Cliff Johnson band. So it wasn't anything against Pete. And we're still good friends.

DV: Yeah, I mean it just kinda happened that way. It wasn't a planned thing.

MB: Plus we really love playing with Soucy. So it's great having him around.

DV: And he's local, which was cool because I wanted a band that was local. Because there was a point where it hit me that it would be a lot of hassle and a lot of money on gas to get to and from practice for each of us. So it just worked out that way. So we're really happy and excited about how things worked out.

CM: Awesome! Well, I wanna thank you guys again for talking with Critical Mass. It's been a blast and I'm stoked to hear the new album when it comes out. Thanks again guys.

Music Reviews: Stop Drop - "Is Distracted"

I'm pretty open when it comes to different styles of music. Always have been. But there ARE certain styles that are either a hit or a miss with me. Reggae is definitely one of them. Sometimes it just feels forced and not really from the heart. Sometimes it's got a groove and feel you just know the artist wrote and played from the soul. I get that feeling from Stop Drop who's version of pop mixed with splashes of reggae.

The bands latest release is called "Is Distracted". And the band actually IS distracted by the different styles they mix into their music. In one corner you have the Elvis Costello "Watching The Detectives" fusion on songs like "Say Hello" and "Caffeine Culture" with it's funky organ and chugging guitars. I can tell they believe in what they play. And they want YOU to believe in their sound too. And, as odd as it may be at times...I DO believe in them.

They band, Tyrus A. (acoustic guitar/vocals), Brooke Nelson (bass), Connor Brummond (organ/trombone/vocals) and Brody Andersen (drums/guitar), who hail from Minneapolis, MN not only play reggae fusion. They also mastered the art of the sunny pop song on stand out track "Tour Song". It'll throw you for a curve, that's for sure. But it's such a great song that, honestly, I wanna hear more of on the next record.

You can download "Is Distracted" for free on the bands Facebook page. So why not give it a try and see if you can channel your inner Rastafarian. Like I said before, reggae is usually a hit or miss with me. But I like this band and this album. I'm excited to see what the future holds for Stop Drop.

Music Reviews: Brandon Harrod - "Wide Open Sun"

Remember when Iggy Pop went from "the worlds forgotten boy" and hooked up with Ziggy Stardust to record pop and funk songs on albums like The Idiot and Lust For Life? Remember how weird you thought it was that the godfather of punk was going in such a drastic different musical direction? But it WORKED! The same can be said of Brandon Harrod.

Harrod, who's the drummer for garage rock punks The Larroquettes, channels his inner Gordon Gano on his new solo album "Wide Open Sun" with it's acoustic singer/songwriter on acid tinged tunes. It's such a departure from his day job as the hard hitting drummer in a fuzzed out garage band. So when you hear songs like "Like My Dad Always Says" and "She Has Her Doubts" you can hear the punk rocker, with the speed and fierce playing. But you also hear a guy who can sing and write some really catchy and great songs at the same time.

When I first heard this album I was taken aback by it's vibe and sound. But the more you listen to it, you hear the beauty in the playing. On "Fire In My Belly" you can hear his angst and desperation to be accepted when he sings "I would rather give a shit than not be shit. But this fire in my belly still burns bright". I think we've all been there. Brandon Harrod sings songs for the everyday man. Insecure, trying to find out who we are, the fight to make a better life...these are songs we can all identify with. And that's what makes "Wide Open Sun" such an amazing record.

Harrod plays all the instruments on this album which is pretty awesome in itself. Then you throw in the fact that this guy's got more talent than most bands who get played on Top 40 radio have in their entire bodies. This guy's a force to be reckoned with. If you're a fan on bands like Violent Femmes, Brandon Harrod's solo work will fit perfectly beside "New Times". Just saying.

Interview with Gerald Rienton of Dana DeStefano & Dollparts

Here at Critical Mass we're always trying to find new and exciting bands making great music and helping them out by giving them some free press. And we've been lucky enough to hear so many awesome bands and give them a shout out! Another up and coming band from the suburbs of Chicago is Dana DeStefano & Dollparts. I recently had the chance to talk with bassist Gerald Rienton about the band. Here's what Gerald had to say.

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass guys. For those new to Dana DeStefano & Dollparts, can you give us some history and how you got together?

Gerald Rienton: Me and Dana have always played music together, but she went to California to record a 3 song demo with Jimmy Messer last year that is up on our Facebook page. She recorded for about two weeks and everything started from there. When she got back from LA, we looked for members right away. Luke Ostojic was our very first guitarist and he helped us out a lot. He helped us with writing Spiders and Trouble Sleeping. Luke got busy with Fizzy Pops so we had to look for a new guitarist. He told us he was just going to help us out until we found a new guitarist from the start. We asked Brian Janecek, our lead guitarist now, to fill in for a show with The Blue Waves and he’s been with the band also ever since. Dana met Patrick, who plays keyboard, while she was teaching vocals at a music summer camp. We went through numerous drummers before we met Sean Sigurdsson. He’s been with us since August.

CM: I have had the chance to hear the bands demo, and was impressed by the sound and the bands true passion for music. Who are some of your personal musical influences?

GR: Exploding Hearts, The Beach Boys, Hole, The Muffs, and other pop/indie bands. We all listen to different genres so it’s kinda cool when we write a new song. Everyone have something different to contribute to writing the songs.

CM: When it comes to songwriting, is it a group effort? Or is there one or two specific songwriters in the band?

GR: Dana writes most of the songs with me. She likes the bass lines I write. We write songs that fit in with the demo all together as a band.

CM: Is there any plans to record either a full length or en EP this year?

GR: Hopefully! As of now though, we are just busy with booking shows and playing at different venues. We're trying to build a fan base.

CM: If/when new material is planned on coming out, will you be releasing it on your own? Or will you shop it around to some local indie labels?

GR: We want to have a label help us out with releasing new material but as of now we have cool spray painted demos that we are selling for pretty cheap, with a free button!

CM: Has the band played out much since forming?

GR: Yes! We love The House Café, that’s like our second home. Dekalb is so cool; everybody’s so chill and relaxed. Jolly Baba owns the venue, and he’s probably one of the coolest dudes I have ever met. We've played at Game Pazzo in Downers Grove, and at Cairo Bar a few weeks ago and it was awesome. We've also played a few house shows here and there. We had a fun one at Sean's house on New Years Eve!

CM: Any plans on taking the show on the road for a tour of the Midwest in the near future?

GR: Hopefully we will over the summer! You can keep updated on the Facebook page.

Music News: The Enders Get Signed!

Music Reviews: The Fizzy Pops - "Manic Motives And The Art Of Faking"

Just when you thought it couldn't get any getter, The Fizzy Pops make another spectacular album! The bands latest release, "Manic Motives And The Art Of Faking" (Swamp Cabbage Records), is a digital only release by this amazingly talented band. The groups style is a mix of pop, 60s girl group and punk rock that's so sweet, it makes sugar taste like salt. The albums clocks in with 15 tracks in 30 minutes. Short and sweet blast of awesomeness from start to finish. The band recorded short blast of music that is so catchy and infectious you'll be dumb founded by hot great it is. The songs are roughly 2 minutes in length which fits my attention span perfectly!

The first song "Alarm Clock" is one of the best album openers I think I've ever heard on a punk record. It's got the killer riff, fun lyrics and great melody. And this is just the first song! I don't know what planet this band came from, but I wanna move there immediately! "Up All Night", "You On The Brain" and "Terrible Liar" have the same spark of energy and bring it all around to make one hell of an album.

Cate (guitar/vocals) and Luke (bass/vocals) feed off each other vocally and mesh so well together that it would be difficult to imagine them not playing together in a band. Each bring something exciting and original to the songs. It almost reminds me of how Keith and Heather from Teen Idols harmonized on songs. Two great singers in one great band? You can't go wrong.

Now that's not to say the rest of the band isn't as talented. Sam Gunz (guitar) and Jake (drums) bring just as much energy and excitement to the project. Everyone plays so well together and the songs just gel into each other is a way that it's almost the perfect album. Very summer-y feeling. This album would go great with a backyard BBQ and some cold ones. I can't believe that music like this is coming fro m the Chicago suburbs! I knew we had a decent scene here. But THIS is the cherry on top of the punk rock sundae! I can't stress this enough...BUY THIS ALBUM!

Interview with Dot Dash

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass guys. I really appreciate it. For those who may be new to Dot Dash, can you give us a little history on the band? How did you get started?

Dot Dash: We got started in the front part of 2010. We’re from Washington D.C. and had all traveled in similar circles. Terry Banks plays guitar and sings; Bill Crandall plays guitar. Hunter Bennett plays bass; and Danny Ingram plays drums. Some of our “ex-bands” include Julie Ocean, Youth Brigade (Dischord), Modest Proposal, The Saturday People, Weatherhead and Swervedriver – and the list goes on…

CM: The band’s sound has a lot of jangly guitars and an amazing back beat to it. In your own words, who are some of the bands musical influences?

Terry: I think my “core” musical inspirations are The Jam, The Byrds and Joy Division. There are lots of others, but I think those are the main ingredients.

Bill: It's always been hard to put a finger on our collective reference points… While we all have slightly different spins, we all had our formative years in punk, mod, 80s post-punk, new wave, and power pop. Speaking for myself, I'd also go back further to The Who, Led Zep, Beatles/Stones, as well as fast-forward to more recent bands including Sigur Ros, The Shins, even electronica.

Hunter: I love The Jam, The Fall and Burt Bacharach.

Danny: I can’t really speak to the band’s influences, but recently I’ve been listening a lot to The Poster Children, The Chameleons and The Left Banke... and some of that energy definitely creeps into what I’m playing.

CM: Is there a main songwriter in Dot Dash? Or when it comes to writing material does everyone bring something to the table?

DD: Terry has written all the songs so far, but everyone writes their own instrumental parts and the end result reflects that.

CM: Being from the D.C. area, which has a rich history of punk music from bands like Minor Threat to Bad Brains, did you guys take any of that influence and put it onto the music you play now?

Terry: For me, harDCore has never been an influence in terms of songwriting, but it’s been a big, big inspiration in terms of overall delivery and attitude, especially people like Dag Nasty.

Bill: I was a mod at the time, so my involvement with punks was more along the lines of 'steely glares' exchanged on the streets of Georgetown. Sometimes we'd go to Little Tavern, buy a bag of those little hamburgers, and have food fights across Wisconsin Avenue. No, seriously, I think anyone who was around then couldn't help but be influenced by the amazing punk scene. I think the main thing we all bring from that and other music of the period is a kind of ‘pre-irony’ passion and sincerity. Because we remember that's how that period of music made us feel…

Hunter: I decided to move to D.C. because I was obsessed with mid-to-late 80s Dischord bands like Embrace, Gray Matter, Shudder To Think and Ignition. If those bands hadn't existed, I wouldn't be in Dot Dash.

Danny: I’ve always said no matter what band I’m in, it’s a punk band. I got my start drumming in some of the very first Dischord bands and though I’ve played in a variety of groups over the last 30-plus years, that initial spark propels everything I do... At the end of the day, however, the current-day influence of those bands and that scene has more to do with the ethos and less to do with the music.

CM: The band’s "Spark>Flame>Ember>Ash" is out now on The Beautiful Music label out of Canada. How did you guys get hooked up with a Canadian label as opposed to an American label?

DD: They’re just awesome guys who liked our music and offered to put it out. The answer was simple!

CM: Is this the band’s first full length album? And has the band released anything prior to this?

DD: In 2010, not long after we started, we had a little 3-song EP come out on a German microlabel called Edition 59 Records, which puts out a lot of underground jangle-pop stuff… Same thing as above: nice people who liked our stuff and wanted to put it out, so we went with it.

CM: Do you guys tour much outside of the D.C. area? And are there any plans for a tour this year?

DD: We play out as much as we can but, so far anyway, it’s all pretty much been in the D.C. area… We’ve done some cool shows, but all in our hood, more or less... Hopefully we’ll be able to get a bit further afield, that’d be great…

CM: Will we be hearing any new music from Dot Dash in 2012?

DD: Yes – that’s the plan anyway. We have eight new songs that we’re doing live, in addition to ones from the album. When we get to 10 or so that we feel really strongly about, we’d love to make a second album.

Interview with Chris from Critical Mass

Back in 2002 I was playing bass in a Chicago band called The Bomb, and we were playing a show at the legendary Fireside Bowl. As we loaded the van, our guitar player (John Maxwell) told us all that "Christopher Carlton messaged me to say he's buying us all a beer tonight before the show." My reply was "I don't know who the hell Christopher Carlton is, but if he's buying us Rolling Rocks, I like him already!" Since that time Christopher and I have become fast friends, and I was happy to see him start his own online blog in May of 2011 called Critical Mass.

Critical Mass has had over 22,000 hits to date and has been viewed in 78 countries around the world. He's interviewed some great musicians , including Keith Morris (Circle Jerks, OFF!) Richie Ramone (Ramones) Dan Vapid (Riverdales, Screeching Weasel, Methadones, Dan Vapid and The Cheats,) Milo Aukerman (Descendents) and of course, yours truly (SMFC -MY BIG BEAUTIFUL.) I decided to corner Christopher for a short interview, which took a lot of persuading for both myself and his beautiful wife, Christine, but finally here it is, a "behind the scenes" kind of interview with a guy who works just as hard as the musicians he promotes to share the beautiful music we center our lives around. Here's to you Chris, next time the beers are on me!

Steev MF Custer: How did you get started doing interviews and what inspired you to start Critical Mass?

Christopher Carlton: I actually got started doing interviews almost by accident. Another blog called Squid Pro Quo posted on Facebook asking if anyone was interested in joining them and doing some album reviews. I said I was interested and next thing I knew I was getting an album to review for the blog. Keep in mind, I had NEVER done anything like this before. I must have done something right because Jason, the guy running SPQ, posted my review. And I also showed a little interest in possibly doing the occasional interview since I know a few people in bands around town.

My first interview was with Darren Vorel from The Scissors. Darren and I go way back, and he was more than gracious in being my first interview. He's a super cool and talented guy, so it was easy to interview him. I was stoked to actually interview someone. And he was stoked to be interviewed by me.

As time went on I got more interviews with people like Chuck Dukowski from Black Flag, Keith Morris formerly of Circle Jerks, currently of OFF!, as well as local musicians like Denis Buckley from 88 Fingers Louie/Explode And Make Up and Ken Fitzner from The Bollweevils.

After a month or so I started getting more and more confident in getting interviews and decided to branch off on my own and started Critical Mass. My first post went up on May 14, 2011 with my interview with Brandon Carlisle from Teenage Bottlerocket. It's been nothing short of a dream come true ever since.

SMFC: Critical Mass has over 22,000 hits and has been viewed in as many as 78 countries since just May of 2011. Did you think the blog would blow up so quickly, or are you disappointed with those results?

CC: Are you kidding me? Steev, I honestly didn't think I would last a month without throwing in the towel. I didn't think it would last, or that anyone would be interested in what I had to say. I have been very fortunate that people have shown interest in my blog and what I have to say. I'm having a blast! Being a music lover and seeing so many talented musicians struggling to get any kind of exposure, it really makes it all worth while for me. I feel like I'm giving BACK for what these men and women have given US!

SMFC: In Nov. of 2011 you sat down for face to face interviews with all of the bands at Metro's night before Thanksgiving show, including Punk legends Naked Raygun. Are there any plans to post the footage from those interviews on Critical mass, and do you plan to do more video interviews in the future?

CC: If I had the money to put into decent recording equipment and a way of actually posting it onto my blog I would maybe consider it. Raygun, The Falcon, Dan Vapid and Mike Byrne and your band My Big Beautiful were nothing but kind and welcoming to me (as well as The Ridgelands who I also video interviewed). I couldn't have done it without the help of you guys. But, yes, I would at some point love to post the interviews online for everyone to see.

SMFC: You've managed to interview some pretty big names in the short time Critical Mass has been around. Here's a three part question: Who was your favorite interview, Who are the interviews that have gotten the most views, and who is the "one that got away" or in other words, who said that they would do an interview that you were really stoked about and then it didn't happen for whatever reason?

CC: Man, talk about being put on the spot. Um...some of my most jaw dropping interviews, because I never thought I would EVER get them, would include Richie Ramone, Milo from Descendents, Jesse Michaels from Op Ivy/Common Rider/Classics Of Love, London May and Eerie Von of Samhain, Chuck Dukowski, all the Raygun guys including former members Camilo Gonzalez and John Haggerty, Brandon from TBR and The Falcon. But I loved each and every one I've done with the exception of maybe Kira from Black Flag. She was kinda rude and bitchy to me for no real reason.

The most viewed interviews have been Dean and Tom from "Team Chromey", which own and tour Neil Peart's old Slingerland chrome drum kit from the 1970's and donate the proceeds to Cancer charities. They have gotten well over 1,000 hits to date. Bill Weber from G.G. Allin's old band Murder Junkies, London May, Eerie Von, Milo and YOU have all gotten big numbers as far as hits go. Impressive if I do say so myself.

Now, the ones that got away. Well, there were quite a few. But I don't think it would be fair to name names....but I'll name bands names instead. You gotta guess who bailed on the interview. Let's see, there was Government Issue, Rise Against and Candy Snatchers. There are more, but I can't think of the names at this moment. Each of those bands had a member who was contacted, they agreed and I never heard back. Not even a "no thanks". In the end I look at it as THEIR loss, not mine!

SMFC: What's next for Critical Mass? How would you like to see the blog grow in 2012?

CC: I'm hoping to do more on camera interviews. Help out more up and coming bands with some free press. Hell, maybe even get to link my blog onto some websites and get some money in so I can buy a domain and have a real website made. But I'm just happy being able to help people out and get to hear some great bands I may not have had the chance to hear otherwise. But I am grateful to each and every person who reads my blog, every band who allows me to either review their music or interview them, and my wife, kids, family and friends who continue to support what I do. Interview with Shawn Refuse from Refuse Resist

Critical Mass: Happy New Year and thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass, Shawn. For anyone who may be new to Refuse Resist, can you give us a little history on your band? How long have you guys been together?

Shawn Refuse: Sure, we have been around since 2007. Mike and John jammed with their friend Nick and had a bunch of cover songs down. I had been out of the music scene for a while so I was looking to get back into it. Searching for a band, I stumbled upon their MySpace (yes myspace) ad. Rented a car and went to tryout. I came from work so I was slightly dressed up and they kinda thought I was a tool. I thought they were rough but had the same ideas that I did. Bring back an old-school sound that was more like 80's hardcore punk instead of chugga chugga music.

Since then we have been through a bunch of bass players. Our current one is long time friend of the band Jamie Payette from Yesterday's Heroes. Two years ago we also added Steve Risteen on rhythm guitar.

CM: With your hometown of Boston having such a rich history of hardcore bands such as Jerry's Kids, S.S. Decontrol and Negative FX among so many others. Who are some of your personal musical influences and how do you feel those influences come across in your music?

SR: Those three are up there. We actually covered Boiling Point with Springa on vocals at the DYS reunion show August 2010. Then recorded it with the original bass player Jaime Sciarappa which is supposed to be coming out in Europe some day. We shall see.

I think the band will also say Black Flag, Minor Threat, Misfits, Bad Brains, etc as well. Really though lately we just write and whatever comes out is what we are. If it's punk, cool. If it's hardcore, cool. If it's rock, cool. We all listen to a lot of different music and genres. So, the last album "Socialized" has some songs with more of a rock beat to them, but we are always on the harder side. More so because I sing the way I do. It's just my voice, ha. And listening to too much Sheer Terror, Kill Your Idols, The Virus and Slapshot growing up. Dead Kennedy's were also the band that drew me to punk in the first place so sometimes you will see a little of that sneak in as well.

CM: Do you feel the Boston hardcore scene has been revived in recent years with bands like Dropkick Murphys and Street Dogs rise in popularity?

SR: I think they have definitely put Boston back into the view of the world, but they are really good rock bands that came from the hardcore scene. I love when they have bands like Sick Of It All and H20 play their shows though, it shows that they are still into good Hardcore/Punk and get the kids out there to see them when they may not have otherwise.

As far as the local scene there are always a bunch of good bands playing in Boston. We are lucky that there is so much talent up here. The shows can go either way but it seems like it is that way all over the country. I know we do better when we play in different states. I love Washington DC and Florida. They have been good to us there on the last tour and it was our first time at those places.

CM: The bands last album "Socialized" came out a couple years back. Are there any plans on releasing new material in 2012?

SR: We have had a rough 2011. Our drummer has been in and out of surgery and we really haven't had the time to write after teaching a few different bass players as well.

2012 we hope will bring new material and more shows out of state. It's hard for any band right now in todays economy. BUT when we do write I can tell you it will be vinyl and possibly a couple splits. We'd love to do a few splits with bands around the country so we can introduce them to the Mass crowd and we could get out the their areas as well.

CM: Since the release of your last album you guys have added Steve Risteen from Slapshot on second guitar. how did Steve come about joining the band?

SR: Well, we had been looking for a second guitar for a while at that point. A friend of mine in the Sprained Ankles was friends with Steve. He asked me to cover a song with them and that Steve would play guitar. I know I get compared to Choke all the time, so I was like "sure why not embrace it" and we did the cover at a little place called All Asia.

We met there and it was a fun time. Next time I saw him was at a screening of the Slapshot movie "Chip On My Shoulder" but that was just in passing.

Later that year we played a show with Murphy's Law in Providence. We asked Steve to cover "No Friend of Mine" with us there and he got the bug.

I asked him a few times to join and he finally did. He has quickly become one of my best friends. He really is one of the best people you will ever meet.

CM: When it comes to songwriting, is it a group effort or is there a primary songwriter in the group?

SR: We write a lot as a group. We are coming up with a new dynamic because of the new members. But the band writes the music and I write the words. On occasion I will write a bass line or two or come up with a chorus and have them write under it. It's pretty all over the place.

Mike and John have a pretty symbiotic relationship though. They play really well together when jamming and writing.

CM: You guys have shared the stage with bands like The casualties, Lower Class Brats and The Business. Pretty impressive in it's own right. Whats it like playing with so many great bands?

They are just bands. Sometimes they bring a lot of people in and it's amazing, sometimes there are prima donnas, but more times than not, it is a good time.

CM:Has the band ever been approached by bands to go ,out on tour or gone out on tours of your own?

SR: Nope. No bands have approached us yet. I would love to do nothing but tour but our jobs make it tough. We did an East/Gulf tour Feb 11 and it was great. Lots of fun and new friends along the way.

CM:What can we expect from Refuse Resist in 2012?

SR: The future is unclear at the moment as our drummer is going back in for surgery in Feb. BUT we do have a couple fill-ins for the dates we have booked. So we will keep on rolling. Like I said earlier we'd like to do some vinyl releases and splits. And, I would like to tour more as well. We shall see.

Interview with Ian Tomele of Voice Of Addiction

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass, guys. For everyone new to V.O.A., can you give us a little background on the band and how you got started?

Ian Tomele: Voice Of Addiction has been around about 8 years now and done over 500 shows throughout the U.S. and eastern Canada. It was started by our old guitarist Jeff and I who had been playing music since middle school in the Cleveland area. He moved to Chicago before me and slowly convinced me to go to music college here. When I move here we also had a drummer living in our house who would one day be our first (and fifth haha) drummer. It was just jamming for a long time, since we were all so busy with college and full-time jobs. But once we found we had a set of music we could play live we decided to start playing around the city. We first did this under the name "Niche." circa 2002-2004. The music was a lot different back then. We were learning so much in school we were combining all sorts of styles. As we got more serious we knew we had to pick a new band name that wasn't already being used. I also wanted to condense our style and focus more on my punk roots. My lyrics have always had a political edge to them. And with the new band name we decided to fully-embrace this. Feeling everyone is addicted whether it be sex, drugs, greed, power, caffeine, religion etc; we want to put these things on the table for discussion that are often ignored. We have 4 releases out now and a couple handfuls of comp's we have been a part of as well. As I also mentioned we had a drummer curse for a long while, but our sixth and current drummer Andy Bobby, has been with us over three years now with most of our shows under his belt. We recently teamed up with a new guitar player, Kyle Tilev. And although we just released a full-length last summer supported by a full U.S. tour, we are already working on new songs.

CM: I hear so many styles and obvious influences in the bands sound. In your own words who are some of the bands musical influences?

IT: Our influences are super all over the place. I have an extensive list on our website for anyone who cares to look.

Every year we become a different band for Halloween and do a slew of shows, so some of the bands we have become are for sure major influences. Three years ago we became Operation Ivy. Being a bass player this was great to be Freeman, other then the fact I did all the vocals as well. Then we were Descendents, one of my favorite all time bands. Their musicianship and melodies were so far above the rest of the punk scene at the moment. Then the Clash. We did all their old school stuff. I have been described vocally to Joe Strummer most of my life, and everything he did has been an enormous influence on me. Next year we are talking about doing Dead Kennedy's but it isn't official. But I/we listen to lots of other music other then punk. Pretty much the whole spectrum of music is represented in our extensive collection in our tour van. Cuz you never know what you might be in the mood for. All three of us are classically trained so it becomes quite eclectic. However, non-music influences are extremely important in our process as well. I believe inspiration is everywhere. You just gotta keep perspective and when it hits you make sure you record or write it down! Too many times I regret forgetting something I swore was the best idea ever. This could be as simple as a melody heard in nature (urban or rural) or just a thought of thematic material, a certain lyric or line etc. I draw heavily from my past experiences and also what I am witnessing and taking part in around me.

CM: On your latest album "Reduce, Reuse, Resist" you guys play some serious heavy tunes like "Wrecking Ball" and "Warriors", but can also throw in some powerful melodic tunes such as "September Remembered". Was it the bands intention to try and mesh all these styles of music onto one solid album? Or did it just come naturally for you guys?

IT: I am more concerned with energy then style necessarily. Punk is the vehicle, the proponent, the idea that propels our message. We are really into melodies and harmonies and meshing these vocally and musically. These are the things that get stuck in peoples heads. Regardless to how "heavy" or such a song is we maintain these elements. But I don't want the songs to sound the same on the album either. I encourage people to listen to it in its entirety, something rarely done these days. I don't want the songs to sound like a broken record. The Punk genre is so diversified with the last 35 some odd years, we really have almost unlimited places to go. The important thing is the punk ideal. Our latest effort "Reduce Reuse Resist" was a concept album of sorts. With songs like Constant Pollution about the BP oil spill in the gulf, to September Remembered about the Anarchist Revolution in Spain in 1936, Bombs Away written from the first hand perspective of a bomb being dropped on a foreign land, and Mother about people coming to our planet in the future and trying to figure out why nothing lives here. This all ties together with the last song, which is the only acoustic song we have ever released, in which I use nearly all the song names throughout the song to tie everything together. Aptly titled "Need Change" has a double meaning, monetarily and socially.

CM: Speaking of songs, when it comes to songwriting, is it a group effort or is there one primary songwriter in the band?

IT: I am the primary songwriter but the process doesn't end there. It usually starts with an idea: Lyric, Vocals, Guitar, Keyboard or Bass. Either the inspiration hits me and I finish the song with new ideas or perhaps pre-existing ideas. Or I will put it on the shelf for future things. But once I get the last spark the entire process of song-writing it as well as the lyrics is very short, maybe 25 minutes. Like I mentioned earlier I never know when or where inspiration will hit so I always try to have pen and paper on me to etch it down. But trust me, the song isn't nearly finished yet. This I would consider the skeleton. I bring this to the guys and teach them the song. So usually when we all try it together for the first time it is the first time I have thought about the bass line. For some reason that always seems to be the last thing. But as this happens we all are coming up with new ideas. We always try every idea regardless of how stupid at least once. So all the harmonies are usually conceived during this period as well.

CM: I know the band is based out of Chicago and has played out of town as often as possible. Have you guys ever been approached about going out on a full scale tour as a supporting act? And are there any plans for a tour of your own in 2012?

IT: As well as running the Chicago punk night for over 3 years, we do get to open for nationals in Chicago when not on tour. Almost all our full-scale tours have been our own. Except for one we did half of with a band from Quebec. We have done shorter joint tours (2 weeks or less) with other bands but nothing else on a major scale. It is really hard with multiple out of town bands on bills in this economy and especially if its a weekday show. We are definitely not opposed to jump on as a supporting act for a national on a tour, the right ones just haven't asked yet. Literally a month ago we got a new guitar player and being only a three piece it makes the position that much more integral. I am about to start booking spring. Of course throughout the Midwest, but the east coast will be a main focus this year. V.o.A. will for sure return to Denver and Texas, and really hope to get all the way west again this year (were there last August) time permitting.

CM: Ben from The Enders has said "they will crush you live!" When you hit that stage do you feel that the energy that comes through on record can be just as strong, if not stronger, in the live performance?

IT: The live performance is really the only way I see artists, especially in our genre, being able to make it these days with the current music industry climate. This is our main exposure and also where we sell most of our merch. Live shows have been our main focus for years now and we play as much as we can afford. Being onstage is the ultimate release for me. We live in a violent world and it can be quite depressing. This is my way of coping I suppose. I got hooked as a kid and have never looked back. We also really encourage crowd participation, inviting people on stage to sing and dance. I don't really like the separation the stage enforces. The best shows are when people can freely interact, dance, sing and have a blast. This experience is as much for me as it is for them and is truly therapeutic. I do think this energy comes through on the record, but at the same time I wouldn't say it is the same. You never know what will happen live and you gotta be prepared for it and pretend its the last day you will be alive.

CM: Will we be seeing any new V.O.A. material in 2012?

IT:We are currently starting to work on new material with our new guitar player. We hope to be working on this the end of 2012. However there are several compilations for 2012 already in the works! As we get our new schedules down, with tour dates, new merch, new recordings etc I will keep everyone up-to-date through our websites and social media.

Music Reviews: CHaMOMILE - "5 Year Nightmare"

CHaMOMILE is a young band out of Bloomington, IN who play riff heavy, DIY style punk rock. And it's pretty damn good too! The band's a 2 piece consisting of Jon on guitar/vocals and Chris on drums. If you're looking for perfectly clear recordings made with top notch production, you're in the wrong place. I've always thought that punk rock should be rough around the edges and in your face. And CHaMOMILE is that band.

The groups latest release "5 Year Nightmare" is 7 fuzzed out rockers that were recorded in the bands basement under damp, muddy circumstances. The album kicks off with "Let Me Out" complete with buzz saw guitars and a heavy drum beat that will have your ears ringing and your heart pounding. And through out the rest of the album this is the style you get. It's what the band has perfected as their own sound, and they show no remorse for their actions. Not that the bands bad...far from it. They just keep it simple with it's approach to playing and writing.

"Indiana Girls" is a nice little ode to the women of the bands home state. Ladies, show some love to these guys...they obviously dig you! "Something To Me" sounds like it was influenced by Nirvana's "Rape Me" with it's soft/heavy juggling sound complete with a guitar solo that would have made Kurt Cobain proud.

"Last Cigarette" closes out this album, which can be downloaded for free on the bands Facebook page, and leaves me unfulfilled and wanting more. Which isn't a BAD thing necessarily. The mark of an amazing band is to make the audience want more! And they have me wanting a LOT more!

I believe CHaMOMILE has promise. The songs are good and the playing is tight. You can tell these guys have their wits about them and have studied the DIY punk rock handbook to the fullest degree. I think that with some time and care these guys could be a really GREAT band instead of an interestingly damn good band. I love the sound, style, songs and attitude. I hope to hear more from this band real soon. Maybe even get em out to Chicago for a couple gigs. If you can still handle it raw, check out CHaMOMILE.

Interview with Team Shotgun

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass guys. For people who may not be familiar with Team Shotgun, can you give us a little history on the band? How did you guys get together?

Jacob: Prior to Team Shotgun, some would consider Rich and I enemies. We played in different bands. Rivals! We even played against each other at a Battle of the Bands in high school. It all started at one drunken ISU party. I was asked by a long time friend (and Rich's girlfriend) to come to one of their band practices. At the time, they needed a bassist. I was wary, but excited. I played bass for maybe two shows before replacing the singer. So it's been that way for the past four years.

CM: I know the bands got a new release called "Romance In A Match". Has the album been officially released yet? And how can people get a copy of it?

Richard: No not yet. We are self producing and self releasing the album, so its hard to gather the funds and time to get it all done. We actually are just waiting to get some CD's labeled. After that, its a matter of waiting for copyright issues and all that shit.

Jacob: Yeah you know, the music industry is such a shit show, it's depressing. We've been working with a friend of ours, an artist/musician in Chicago, named Sam Laracco. With him and his band Snuff, we're attempting to give Chicago some heart and soul back. It's tough playing out here you know? It's the same shit spilling out of peoples mouths.

Matt: Anyways, people can get a copy of the album by emailing us at: teamshotgun@yahoo.com OR by contacting us by facebook. We have a myspace, but I dont think anyone really uses that anymore. We could send it out old school by the Mail, or even meet up with someone with a copy of the album. We want to keep things personal.

Jacob: Yeah, fuck iTunes. We will come to your house at 2am with a copy of the album. Then eat your food, drink your beer, and sleep with your women.

CM: Is this the bands first release? Or do you have other material out?

Jacob: It is the first release, but we have another one on the way in a few months. "Get Fisted", as it's titled, features live tracks and B sides. We figured, when we're booking a show, why give a venue a copy of our produced album? We want them to know we can play everything live, and it sounds almost the same or even better.

CM: I like the bands name. How did you come up with the name Team Shotgun?

Matt: Beer! Honestly, it's beer. We used to shotgun beer together at parties. A friend of ours called us a team. So, Team Shotgun was born.

Jacob: Also, we plan on shooting peoples faces off with shotguns. Of course, that's not true, but you never know.

CM: I know the bands got a more hardcore style, which I always liked going back to the 80s. Who are some of the bands personal influences?

Richard: Well to be honest, we all listen to different music. That's not saying we don't LIKE some of the music, but we all have put our own ideas in what we should sound like into our playing.

Matt: I'm my own man, I play my own music. But, I guess Rise Against.

Jacob: See, now I HATE Rise Against with a passion. Nothing they do, in my opinion, sounds good. I listen to The Smiths, and Matt isn't too fond of them. It's a wide variety, you know. But musically, I would say Danzig. Anything he's done. Gordon Gano and Brian Ritchie from the Violent Femmes played a big role too.

Richard: Social Distortion, Blondie, Common Rider, and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Jacob: Ugh, the Smashing Pumpkins. The only song I've heard that I liked was Siva.

Richard: Yeah, Go Fuck Yourself.

Jacob: *middle finger* No but really, we don't WANT to sound like anyone or any specific style. We like having a variety in what we can do. Depending on my mood, when people ask me what kind of music we play I either dub it "Alternapunk" or "Whatever the Fuck we want". Fuck genres. We'll play whatever we want.

CM: Is there a primary songwriter for the band or is it a group effort when coming up with new material?

Richard: It's a group/solo effort. Like, Jake will come up to me with a riff, we'll work on it together. Then we'll show Matt, and he'll play something.

Jacob: Yeah, sometimes we'll just play whatever we want, and if it sounds good together we leave it. No one really has complete control over anything. Like, when I write lyrics, I give them to Rich. If he likes them, we keep them. If he doesn't, I might change it or I might just say "too bad thats what I'm singing" Either way, it all works out to our benefit.

CM: Has the band gigged outside of the your hometown of Frankfort? And are there any plans to take the show on the road for a short tour or even a weekend run of shows?

Jacob: Oh yeah. The only Chicago show we've played has been Cals Bar. It hard to get people to come out to Chicago, since we're from the suburbs. We're trying to get our music heard in Chicago so we can play some more venues up there. Otherwise, we've played at Zone Comics in Lockport, The Sonic Portrait in Morris (which is now the Korova).

Richard: We're try as hard as possible to stay away from the JT Music venues. They're a fucking ripoff!

Matt: Yeah fuck that.

Jacob: Some house shows and such. As for the tour, Hell Yes. We just need the time off and the money. We actually have a show coming up at The Mutiny on Feb 23rd. Trying to plug that as much as possible. We need a large draw so we can play there again on the weekend. Plus, we just want people to listen to our music. Fuck, if you dont like it, I dont care. Just give it a chance, you know? Anyways, the show is on Feb 23rd at The Mutiny. 10pm. I dont know what the cover is yet. But, we're playing with Snuff and one more band TBA.

CM: Are there any plans in the new year to either record or release new material?

Matt: Yes, definitely. We're working on a new album right now. Plus, there's that Live and B side issue mentioned earlier.

CM: Is there a website you guys wanna plug where people can get up to date news, show dates, or get some merch?

Richard: Well, for now, the best way to view anything we have is Facebook. A friend of ours is designing a website right now, so we're waiting for that to get finished. Also, we getting some shirts, buttons, and stickers made.

Interview With Rocco from Bankrupt

Critical Mass: Thanks for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass, Rocco. I'm hoping everyone had a safe New Year. For anyone who may be new to Bankrupt, can you give us some history on your band? How did you guys get together?

Rocco: We are Bankrupt from Budapest, Hungary. We started the band back in ’96, and the current line-up (Rocco - vox/bass, William – guitar/vox, Shorty – drums) got together in 2000.

300 gigs and 6 CD releases later we’re still having fun doing this.

CM: You have such a great sound and style ranging from pop/punk to surf and rockabilly. Who are some of your musical influences?

Rocco: We love all the classic melodic punk bands, the Ramones, the Clash, the Descendents, the Buzzcocks, and also more recent ones like the Dwarves, or NOFX. Since we love the Ramones, we tend to like Ramonescore bands like Teenage Bottlerocket, or our Austrian buddies, the DeeCracks.

Then we also like punkabilly bands like the Peacocks or Mad Sin, or British indie bands like the Manic Street Preachers or Pulp. Plus lately I have this surf rock fixation, from Dick Dale to Man or Astroman.

Now, you add all these up and you get Bankrupt.

CM: The bands newest EP "Rewound" came out recently and has a more surf orientated sound than your older albums. How do you guys feel your sound has changed since your last release?

Rocco: We think the last 4 releases all turned out good, and they all have a different character. Shorter Than Danny DeVito (2006) is mostly a pop/punk album, Rocket To Riot City (2008) has a rawer punk rock sound and some of our fastest songs. Razor Wires And Neon Lights (2009) is our most political release, it deals with how the East-West divide survived in Europe 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The new EP, Rewound is a return to pop/punk with the addition of surf and indie rock elements. It was an experiment about how far we can go with cleaning up our sound without getting stoned by the punk community, but apparently, we could get away with it. And now we really sound different from most pop/punk bands, which feels great.

CM: You guys have decided to give away your new EP as a free download, and have gotten over 500 downloads to date since the October release. I think it's a really great release, myself. Super catchy and a lot of fun. Whats the feedback been like from other people?

Rocco: The reviews we got so far were good, and it seems we could reach out a little beyond the punk rock scene with this sound. We got some positive feedback from the indie and the surf scenes as well. We got some support slots to a leading Hungarian alternative rock band, Kiscsillag, and we were wondering how their audience would react to our sound. But these gigs turned out surprisingly good as well.

CM: When it comes to songwriting is it a group effort? Or is there a primary songwriter in the group?

Rocco: I start the songwriting by doing demo versions, and then we finalize the songs together at rehearsals.

CM: Have you guy's toured outside of your homeland in the past? And are there any plans for a tour in 2012?

Rocco: We have played over 300 gigs in 9 countries so far. We mostly played in Central Europe (Hungary, Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic) and also a few in other nearby countries like Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Serbia. Since we all have real jobs, it’s hard to organize longer tours. We usually just embark on 2-3 day concert trips on weekends, so the lyrics of Weekend pretty much apply to us as well.

So far we only have 2 Austrian dates confirmed for 2012, so if by any chance anyone reading this could help us with booking, don’t hesitate to contact us!

CM: Speaking of 2012, what's the bands plans for this year? Are there any plans for another release this year? Possibly a full length LP?

Rocco: We’ll most likely stick to recording 4-5 songs at the time as this is the amount we can concentrate on without compromising on quality. Since in our league free downloads have become the only way to get your music out to the people, we don’t see the need to record more songs anyway. We’re people with short attention spans and the same goes for most of our audience.
