Interview With Radio Santoni From The Cathy Santonies

Critical Mass: Thank you for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass. I know the bands got an EP, "I'm Yr Friend! I'm Yr Revolution!" as well as a 3 song demo. Are these releases downloads only? Or are there hard copies for sale at shows?

Radio Santoni: We have hard copies of the Friend/Revolution EP you can get at our shows or online--it's a CD with a lyrics zine, and each one is hand-stamped in our secret merch lab.
We also have a split vinyl EP now out with our friends Vortis. Our side is called "Rock And Roll Belongs To Everyone". You can download that on our bandcamp, but the vinyl has a cover of "Oh Bondage! Up Yours!" by Vortis with Radio on guest vocals.

CM: Are there any plans for a full length release in the coming months?

RS: We're writing a bunch of new songs (check out our youtube channel, TheCathySantonies, for some recent fan videos of us playing the songs at shows), and we're going to record them when each one is totally ready. Probably in fall. We're still writing even more new shit too!

CM: I understand you don't have a label that you're currently signed to. Has any labels approached the band as far as signing you?

RS: So far, we have always done everything ourselves, with some help from our friends. We'd really love getting some help from a label so that we can focus on writing more!

CM: Can you give us a little history on the band? How did you all get started and how long have you been around?

RS: The four of us have been playing together for a little over a year. Radio and Mojo spent a lot of time writing music together when we were younger and started The Cathy Santonies. We played our first show in 2007. Jane started playing with us in 2008. She and Chip used to play in Three Dollar Bill together. They actually met at the first Ladyfest Midwest event in 2001 when Three Dollar Bill performed.

CM: You describe your sound as "punk, cock rock, riot grrrl". What are your personal musical influences?

RS: Hmmm, well personally i like rock n roll, blues, soul music, riot grrrl, crooners, divas, and grooves. I don't know how much any of that influences my playing, but i'm sure it does!
We all have pretty different influences from each other but we all love rock n roll.

CM: The bands got some shows coming up in the next month (7/18 in  Millennium Park, 8/20 at Empty Bottle, 8/27 at Ace Bar). Has the band had the chance to play out of the Chicago area at all?

RS: Yeah, we've been around the midwest on short weekend jaunts, but one thing we would love to do in the very near future is go on a gd tour.

CM: Any big plans for the second half of 2011 for the band? Possibly more shows past August?

RS: September will see the santonies on hiatus as we travel the world being glamorous. In the fall we'll be recording, hopefully, and also playing in chi and around the midwest.

CM: Is there a website that you would like to plug where fans can get up to date news on upcoming releases, show dates and merch?

RS:

CM: Thank again for taking the time to talk with Critical Mass. I hope to see you live real soon. And I wanna wish you all the best in the future. Thanks again for your time.

RS: Thanks for the interview! Come and hang out sometime!

  1. the cathy santonies started in 2005. jane danger was not an original member. it was originally a three piece garage punk band., it turned into a cock rock band. at this point the band decided to rewrite history and exclude/erase founding members. it was originaly a three piece band , mojo, raedy, and johnny-the original band.
