Bankrupt really isn't a word you wanna hear, especially in this economy. Unless, that is, you're talking about good punk rock. Bankrupt are a great band from Budapest, Hungary who play pop punk with a hint of surf and rockabilly throw into the mix. The bands been around for 15 years churning out some really cool records like 2006's "Shorter Than Danny DeVito" and the "Razor Wires And Neon Lights" EP. The bands sound has changed a little over the years. Basically fine tuning their sound into a juggernaut of sound all their own.
The bands latest release "Rewound", which is available as a free download on the bands website, is a 4 song EP of catchy surf punk rock. The suns always shining and the surfs always up every time you put this record on for a spin...even if it is cold and snowing outside. The band, Rocco (bass/vocals), William (guitar/vocals) and Shorty (drums) write and play songs for the everyday working class folk. They, like most if us, like to have fun. And on songs like "Weekend" it's all about having fun on our days off. After "sweating all day, shaking all night, dream of a promotion" it nice to kick back and enjoy some down time because "life begins on the weekend!" Now that's something we can all relate to!
The pure pop/punk feel of "Happenstance" is another solid riff driven song that has a catchy beat and energy that will make you "ignore reality" and "accept the irony". I love this song. Sure, it's only 1:24 long. But who really needs anything more than that to make a point? Hit it and quit it, short and sweet made for punks with a short attention span...kinda like me!
The EP even has a cool little surf instrumental track in the opening song "Clint". I have always been a sucker for punk bands who can knock out a surf instrumental track. And "Clint" is a monster album opener. It really sets the tone for the rest of the record. I'm excited to hear more from this band. I love the sun and fun style of music they play. Good fun music never gets old or goes out of style. And here's to hoping this band keep it up on the next album.
4 / 5 stars.
